Italian-Born LHP Samuel Aldegheri Expected With Los Angeles Angels For Series at Fenway

Italian left-hander Samuel Aldegheri is expected to join the Los Angeles Angels for their three-game road series against the Boston Red Sox, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network on June 1.

The series opens June 2 at 7:10 p.m. Eastern at Fenway Park in Boston. The Angels enter the matchup at 27-32, fourth in the American League West, while the Red Sox sit at 29-32, fourth in the AL East.

The move had not officially been made at the time of Morosi’s report. That changed Monday afternoon, when the Angels recalled Aldegheri from Double-A Rocket City and outfielder Matthew Lugo from Triple-A Salt Lake, while placing right-hander Robert Stephenson on the 15-day injured list with right biceps inflammation, retroactive to May 31, and infielder Yoán Moncada on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation.

The series opens June 2 at 7:10 p.m. Eastern at Fenway Park in Boston. The Angels enter the matchup at 27-32, fourth in the American League West, while the Red Sox sit at 29-32, fourth in the AL East.

So far this season with Double-A Rocket City, Aldegheri has made nine starts, posting a 2-2 record with a 4.34 ERA. Over 47.2 innings, he has allowed 42 hits, 23 earned runs, and three home runs while striking out 48 and walking 27. His WHIP stands at 1.45.

Aldegheri would be the first Italian-born pitcher to appear in an MLB game since Alessandro Maestri appeared on a big league roster in 2010, though Maestri never made a debut.

Aldegheri previously confirmed his commitment to pitch for Italy in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, where they will compete in Pool B alongside the United States, Mexico, Great Britain, and Brazil at Daikin Park in Houston from March 6–11. He spoke to World Baseball Network in Tempe during spring training about his excitement to represent his home country and his ongoing dialogue with Italy manager Francisco Cervelli and FIBS president Marco Mazzieri.

He discussed his developmental goals for the 2025 season and his efforts to refine his mechanics with Angels staff and coaches. Italy’s WBC roster is expected to include several MLB-affiliated players, and the national team may also participate in the 2026 Caribbean Series. Aldegheri’s journey to MLB, his early career with Parma Clima, and his development through the Phillies and Angels organizations, including his 2024 MLB debut, are covered in detail in our earlier profile.
