PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Veteran leadership and Major League pedigree were front and center as Italy and the Netherlands continued preparations for the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Southwest Florida.
Italy manager Francisco Cervelli made it clear the program is thinking long-term, not just about one tournament cycle. The goal, he said, is building a young core capable of competing not only in 2026, but across multiple Classics.
Cervelli is joined by four-time World Series champion Jorge Posada, who is serving as an assistant hitting coach. Posada emphasized mentorship, saying his role is to provide another set of experienced eyes while helping hitters adjust to elite international competition.
For the Netherlands, veteran pitcher Shairon Martis reflected on how much the tournament has grown since he threw the first no-hitter in World Baseball Classic history in 2006. With established stars returning to the roster, Martis believes the Dutch enter 2026 deeper and stronger than previous editions.
From MLB clubhouse leadership to sustained European development, both programs are leaning on experience as they prepare for another run on baseball’s biggest international stage.
