LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On Friday, the Louisville Cardinals defeated the Miami Hurricanes 8-1 in game one of the Louisville super regional. The win puts Louisville one win away from making their sixth appearance in the College World Series.
Louisville’s Offense Thrives with Jake Munroe Leading the Charge – In the second, third, and fourth innings, the Cardinals put up all eight of their runs to break out in front of Miami.
After a solo home run by Garret Pike, third baseman Jake Munroe hit a solo home run as well to make it a 2-0 game.
After the Hurricanes responded with a run off a sacrifice fly by Renzo Gonzalez, Louisville tacked on five runs in the third inning. A bad error by Miami pitcher AJ Ciscar allowed Louisville to score two runs.
Munroe struck again after that with a three-run home run to make it a 7-1 game.
In the fourth inning, the Louisville third baseman hit a sacrifice fly that scored his teammate Matt Klein.
Munroe talked about what was going right for him with his swings.
“I just tried to get back to what gave me early-season success,” Munroe said. “I was just trying to be calm, move the baseball, and stay down the line.”
When the game was all said and done, the Cardinals had 10 hits in the game.
Patrick Forbes Holds Miami Offense Down With Brilliant Start – After a 13-strikeout performance in the Nashville regional against East Tennessee State, Patrick Forbes got Louisville off on the right foot once again in the super regional.
In 5 2/3 innings, he had nine strikeouts while giving up just four hits and one earned run. He threw a total of 107 pitches.
Forbes was also credited with the win and now has a 4.36 ERA this season.
Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell talked about Forbes’ start in the super regional win.
“It’s fun to see,” McDonnell said. “In the last month, he’s pitched out of the stretch, pitched out of jams, and has not let the game snowball on him…His best days are ahead of him.”
Up Next – With the win, Louisville is now one win away from their sixth appearance in the College World Series.
Game two of the Louisville super regional at Jim Patterson Stadium is scheduled for 11 a.m. EDT.
The game can be watched on ESPN.
