The man known as “The Voice of the Diamond Dawgs” has seen the rise and prosperity within one of college baseball’s best historical programs. During his tenure with Mississippi State, the team has accomplished so much.
Ellis was there for 33 NCAA Tournament appearances and 11 trips to Omaha for the College World Series. He also was there to call Mississippi State, finally winning the school’s first national championship in 2021.
In addition, he was there to watch the Bulldogs win 12 combined SEC regular-season and tournament titles.
Here is a statement from Ellis about his retirement on Mississippi State’s athletic website.
“It’s been a total pleasure being part of Mississippi State baseball and serving this incredible university that I love for the past 46 years…I have nothing but fond memories of all the players, coaches, and fans of Mississippi State. They’re the best in the country. They’ve made it an absolute joy to tell the extraordinary stories of Mississippi State to the Bulldog family. They’re what makes this place so special. I can’t say ‘Thank you’ enough. I’m going to enjoy being in the stands and continuing to support all things Mississippi State.”
Mississippi State has already taken a step further in paying tribute to its beloved broadcaster. In 2019, the radio booth at Dudy Noble Field was renamed the Jim Ellis Broadcast Booth.
The school has yet to announce a replacement for Ellis.
