On Wednesday, two big-time college baseball players in Stanford’s Joey Volchko and UNC Wilmington’s Tanner Thach entered the transfer portal.

Joey Volchko, STAN, RHP

Volchko was named a preseason All-American by many outlets, such as Baseball America and Perfect Game, prior to the 2025 college baseball season.

D1 Baseball also named him a top 40 starting pitcher prior to the season.

In his career, the Stanford right-hander has a 5.89 ERA in 113 innings of work. He has 109 strikeouts during that stretch of play.

Volchko is not the only Stanford pitcher to enter the transfer portal. Matt Scott, who played with the Cardinal for three seasons, recently committed to Georgia for the 2026 season.

Tanner Thach, UNCW, 1B

Tanner Thach also entered the transfer portal after three seasons with UNC Wilmington.

During the 2025 season, he had a .325 batting average, a .409 on-base percentage, 12 home runs, and 46 RBI.

Thach has some impressive career totals as well after three seasons with the Seahawks. He has 225 hits, 54 home runs, and 189 RBI during three seasons in Wilmington.

He has also sepnt some time on the mound, throwing a combined 8 2/3 innings with the Seahawks in 2023 and 2024 before focusing solely on hitting in 2025.

The move into the transfer portal does not mean Thach is going to stick around in college baseball next season. He is draft eligible and according to MLB.com, the Belvidere, N.C. native is the 151st ranked prospect in the MLB draft.

Volchko and Thach both offer high upside to teams that come calling for them in the transfer portal. They are two players with a lot of MLB draft stock to their names.
