The Tennessee Volunteers announced that Josh Elander is set to become the head coach this weekend.

The news came three days after it was announced that former head coach Tony Vitello was heading to San Francisco to be the Giants’ manager.

In a press release, here is what the University of Tennessee athletic director, Danny White, had to say about hiring Elander.

From the outset of this national search, Josh emerged as the undeniable top choice,” said White. “His relentless commitment has helped transform Tennessee baseball into a powerhouse, and we are proud to have him as our next head coach on Rocky Top. His influence inspires excellence in every aspect of our program, and we look forward to continuing our quest for championships on the diamond under Josh’s guidance!”

Elander Moves Up From Associate Head Coach Role

Elander was alongside Vitello for the length of the former coach’s run at Tennessee. Since 2017, he has been the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Volunteers.

During his time as recruiting coordinator, Elander helped put together eight top 15 recruiting classes, according to Perfect Game.

In 2024 and 2025, the Volunteers have brought in back-to-back number one overall recruiting classes.

Elander has also been a part of Tennessee’s development into one of the top offensive teams in college baseball.

The Volunteers have hit 100+ home runs in each of the last four seasons.

Elander has been a part of six NCAA Tournament appearances, five straight super regional appearances, and three trips to the College World Series. He was also a part of Tennessee’s 2024 national championship run.

He has seen what it takes to get Tennessee to the top of college baseball under Vitello. Now, he will step in and take the reins as head coach of the Volunteers.
