Judge and Soto both homered for the second straight day as the Yankees took down Cleveland in the second game of the series. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB.
Yankees 8, Guardians 1
Aaron Judge hit two home runs and drove in three runs, and Juan Soto hit a two-run homer of his own in the first inning to push the Yankees past Cleveland. Judge went deep for the sixth time in his last nine games and took his total to 47 on the season. New York regained control of the top spot in the AL East, a half-game above the Orioles.
The Mets took the final game of the series against Baltimore after a pinch-hit homer by Jesse Winker in the ninth inning. Sean Manaea had nine strikeouts and allowed three runs in seven innings to help New York secure their second straight series win.
Red Sox 4, Astros 1
Red Sox rookie Ceddanne Rafaela hit an RBI double in the second inning off Justin Verlander, who pitched for the first time since June 9, that gave the Red Sox the lead and proved to be the winning run. Rafaela doubled in another run in the seventh to give Boston some insurance. The Red Sox remain one spot out of wild card position in the AL.
Rangers 1, Pirates 0
Wyatt Langford drove in the winning run for Texas with two outs in the ninth to win the series against the Pirates and win their third out of four. Andrew Heaney struck out eight batters and allowed five hits in five shutout innings.
White Sox 6, Giants 2
The White Sox scored four runs in the ninth after Korey Lee broke up the tie by driving in two runs on a single to center field. Lenyn Sosa drove two more runners in two pitches after Lee and Chicago snapped their four-game skid.
Nationals 6, Rockies 1
Mitchell Parker allowed one run in seven innings to help Washington take the second game of the series. A four-run third inning gave the Nationals a comfortable lead. Rookie James Wood had three hits and scored a run for the Nats.
Twins 11, Padres 4
The Twins ended their three-game losing streak thanks to a seven-run fourth inning that gave Minnesota an eight-run lead. Matt Wallner hit a three-run homer to cap off the big fourth inning. Minnesota holds the second wild card spot in the AL race.
Phillies 3, Braves 2
Brandon Marsh hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the eighth to give the Phillies a lead and provide the winning run. Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner drove in runs in the sixth inning to tie the game for Philadelphia before Marsh’s sac fly. The Phillies now lead the Braves by seven games in the NL East, with five games left between the two.
Royals 3, Angels 0
Kansas City won their sixth game in the last seven and their second straight series after a shutout of the Angels. Michael Lorenzen pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only four hits to pick up the win. Kyle Isabel hit a two-RBI double in the second inning to put the Royals on the board and help them toward the victory.
Reds 11, Blue Jays 7
Elly De La Cruz homered and stole his 60th base to become just the fifth player since 1901 to have 20 homers and 60 stolen bases in a season. The Reds came back from a six-run deficit after scoring five runs in the fifth inning, which was capped off by a Santiago Espinal walk with the bases loaded to give Cincinnati the lead.
Lourdes Gurriel drove in four runs, including a pinch-hit three-run double in the seventh inning that gave the Diamondbacks the lead. Arizona completed the sweep of the Marlins and improved to a Major League’s best 31-13 since July 1. The Diamondbacks remain tied for second with the Padres in the NL West.
Cardinals 10, Brewers 6
Nolan Arenado hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to win the game for the Cardinals. Matt Carpenter and Tommy Pham both walked home a run in the ninth to tie the game at six runs a piece before the Arenado grand slam. The win snapped Milwaukee’s six-game winning streak.
Tigers 8, Cubs 2
Detroit got homers from Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, and Trey Sweeney, who hit his first career home run in the second inning, to get past the Cubs to win their seventh game in the last nine. Greene and Carpenter both drove in three runs to help the Tigers take the second game of the series in Chicago. Five Tigers pitchers held the Cubs to two runs in another bullpen day for Detroit.
Rays 4, A’s 2
Jose Siri hit a two-run homer in the seventh that gave the Rays the lead and proved to be the winning runs. Siri homered in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game for the only run of the game. Tampa Bay has won five of their last six games.
The Dodgers pushed their winning streak to four games after finishing the sweep of the Mariners. Max Muncy drove in three runs on a double in the fifth that ended the Dodgers five-run inning. Jack Flaherty allowed one run in five and two-thirds to get the win. Seattle is five games behind the Astros and second in the AL West.
