Kumar Rocker Makes History With MLB Debut

Former Vanderbilt star Kumar Rocker made his MLB debut for the Texas Rangers on September 12. By starting against the Seattle Mariners, he became the first player of Indian descent to make his debut in the big leagues. Rocker pitched seven innings, striking out seven along the way. However, the road to Rocker’s debut has been a long one.

Rocker was an outstanding college baseball player at Vanderbilt. In 2029, he helped lead the school to a national championship. He was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player. In 2021, he helped lead Vanderbilt back to the College World Series, but the team fell short of its second title in as many trips to Omaha. However, Rocker was a First-Team All-American and was selected to the SEC All-Conference team.

Rocker was selected with the 10th pick in the 2021 MLB Draft by the New York Mets.

However, concerns about his health led the Mets to not sign him. Rocker decided to sign with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Frontier League. In 20 innings pitched for Tri-City, Rocker had a 1.35 ERA with 32 strikeouts and four walks. The Texas Rangers selected him with the third pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Rocker did not play in a Minor League game for the Rangers in 2022 but pitched in the Arizona Fall League. In 2023, Rocker debuted in High-A Hickory but needed Tommy John Surgery in May. He returned in July 2024, quickly moving up through the system. After allowing just three earned runs over nine starts in Double-A Round Rock and Triple-A Frisco, the Rangers called him up.

Rocker’s mother Lalitha’s parents immigrated to America in the 1960’s. His father, Tracy, is a College Football Hall of Famer and is currently a defensive line coach for the Tennessee Titans.
