LA Dodgers Call Up Cuban Utility Player Miguel Vargas

The Los Angeles Dodgers called up Cuban utility player Miguel Vargas on May 17, Francys Romero of beisbolfr.com reported.

 

The Dodgers placed first baseman Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain, activated right fielder Jason Heyward from the 10-day injured list, optioned outfielder James Outman to Triple-A Oklahoma City, recalled right-handed pitcher Ricky Vanasco from Triple-A Oklahoma City, sent right-handed pitcher Nabil Crismatt outright to Oklahoma City Baseball Club, and optioned left-handed pitcher Nick Ramirez to Oklahoma City Baseball Club on May 17, according to the team’s transaction page.

Vargas, 24, was born in La Habana, Cuba, and made his MLB debut on August 3, 2022, on the road against the San Francisco Giants.

Vargas is in his third season with the Dodgers.

 

Vargas has been with the Dodgers organization since he signed as an international free agent on September 17, 2017.

 

He played 39 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City to start the 2024 regular season. He batted .295 with 181 plate appearances, dialing 41 hits, 14 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 38 RBI, swiping eight bases, 34 walks, and 30 strikeouts before being promoted.

 

Vargas started in 35 games in left field with Triple-A Oklahoma City through 306.2 innings, with 57 chances, 54 putouts, one assist, two errors, and a .965 fielding percentage.

 

Last season, Vargas played between Triple-Oklahoma City and the Dodgers.

 

In Chavez Ravine, Vargas played in 81 games and batted .195 with 303 plate appearances smacking 50 hits, 15 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 32 RBI, three stolen bases, 38 walks, 61 strikeouts, and a .672 OPS.

 

With Oklahoma City, Vargas batted .288 and played in 60 games with 285 plate appearances, recording 68 hits, 15 doubles, 10 home runs, 43 RBI, eight stolen bases, 46 walks, 57 strikeouts, and a .886 OPS.

 

During his two seasons with the Dodgers, Vargas has played in 99 games with a .191 average in 353 plate appearances, slashing 58 hits, 16 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 40 RBI, four stolen bases, 40 walks, 74 strikeouts, and a .640 OPS.
