LAMP: Jaguares de Nayarit Get Top Seed As Playoff Matchups Are Set; Reinforcement Draft Held

With the regular season in the Liga ARCO Mexicana concluded, the playoff matchups are set for the first round of the playoffs.

Holding the top overall seed, the Jaguares de Nayarit will face the No. 8 seed, the Algodoneros de Guasave, in the first round. The Jaguares finished the season 40-28 with a +71 run differential and went 20-13 in the second half, while the Algodoneros qualified for the playoffs on the regular season’s penultimate day after going 15-18 in the second half and knocking out the Tucson Baseball Team by half a playoff point.

The Yaquis de Obregon, holding the No. 2 seed, will face the Aguilas de Mexicali, while the third-seeded Naranjeros de Hermosillo will face the defending LAMP champions, Benji Gil’s Charros de Jalisco. Lorenzo Bundy and the No. 4 seed Tomateros de Culiacan will face the Caneros de Los Mochis in the fourth series.

Reinforcement Draft Selections Made – Six of the eight teams in the playoffs selected players in the reinforcement draft following last night’s games, with the Charros de Jalisco and Tomateros de Culiacan electing to not take any players in the reinforcement draft.

The Jaguares de Nayarit selected outfielder River Town from the Tucson Baseball Team. Town batted .324, fifth-best in the LAMP this season, and had one home run and 15 RBIs.

Town’s teammate, reliever Edwyn Valle, was taken by the Caneros de Los Mochis. Valle threw 41 2/3 innings for Tucson, posting a 2.38 ERA and 29 strikeouts.

The Yaquis de Obregon took infielder Ramiro Pena from the Venados de Mazatlan, who batted .273 with four home runs and 23 RBIs.

Braulio Torres-Perez of the Venados was taken by the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, who threw 46 1/3 innings over 11 appearances with Mazatlan, posting a 3.11 ERA despite struggling with control, walking 21 while striking out 19.

The Aguilas de Mexicali picked up two players in the reinforcement draft, taking catcher Alexis Wilson, one of the league’s best defensive backstops, and starting pitcher Mark Simon. Wilson batted .211 with three homers, but has one of the top arms behind the plate, and Simon made five starts, throwing 24 2/3 innings with a 2.55 ERA.

Guasave selected infielder Samar Leyva from Tucson. Leyva batted .263 with two home runs and 18 RBIs for the Baseball Team and will shore up the Algodoneros’ infield defense.

Each team that made a selection or selections in the reinforcement draft will have to make a corresponding transaction to add their reinforcement draft picks to the active roster.
