Naranjeros de Hermosillo 6, Tomateros de Culiacan 2 – The two teams at the top of the overall standings are headed in different directions. With a win Sunday, the Naranjeros swept first-half winner Culiacan, giving them a two-game lead in the overall standings and a 13-2 mark in the second half. Robert Stock threw six shutout innings for Hermosillo, allowing three hits, walking six and striking out six to earn the win. Jasson Atondo went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and three RBIs in the win. The loss drops the Tomateros to 5-10 in the second half, putting them in a three-way tie for eighth with Navojoa and Monterrey. Even if the Tomateros, who have lost five straight, finished 10th in the second half, they would likely still have enough points to make the playoffs by virtue of having finished first the first half of the season.
Charros de Jalisco 8, Caneros de Los Mochis 3 – Julian Ornelas got the Charros on the board with a two-run homer in the fourth and Alfredo Hurtado’s sixth-inning grand slam put Jalisco ahead for good. The win made the Charros 10-5 in the second half, giving them sole possession of second place, where they trail Hermosillo by three games.
Aguilas de Mexicali 1, Yaquis de Obregon 0 – Kennys Vargas drove in the game’s only run with a double to right field in the bottom of the eighth, allowing Alex Mejia to score. David Reyes threw seven innings, allowing four hits, a walk, and striking out seven for Mexicali (7-8 second half). Obregon went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Algodoneros de Guasave 2, Venados de Mazatlan 0 – Kevin Padlo provided all the offense Guasave needed to get past Mazatlan when he hit a two-run homer to left center in the sixth. Four Guasave pitchers combined to allow three hits and a walk while striking out 12 Venados as the Algodoneros improved to 9-6 in the second half.
Mayos de Navojoa 4, Sultanes de Monterrey 1 (Game 1/7 Innings) – Bobby Bradley went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI as the Mayos took the first game of the doubleheader. The Sultanes’ lone run came in the first when Alejandro Mejia singled home Fernando Villegas.
Sultanes de Monterrey 4, Mayos de Navojoa 0 (Game 2/7 Innings) – The Sultanes got a pair of runs in the thir dona. two-run double by Carlos Sepulveda and another pair in the fourth, the first on a sacrifice bunt by Edson Garcia that scored Mason Martin and then another on a single by Emmanuel Avila that scored Alejandro Mejia. At 5-10, the Sultanes likely need to finish the second half in sixth place or better to have a chance at the postseason.
