The Sultanes de Monterrey, who finished 10th in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico’s first half with a 12-22 record, lost to the Tomateros de Culiacan 4-3 on Friday night, and in doing so, earned an ignoble prize.
It was the 40th loss of the season for Monterrey, which is 6-18 in the second half, and they Sultanes are almost certain to miss the playoffs, as they would need to finish — at minimum — in fifth place in the second half of the season to have an outside chance at the postseason.
Culiacan scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the first, getting and RBI single from Dwight Smith Jr. and a three-run homer from Cesar Mendoza in the win, their fifth straight.
Donovan Casey went 3-for-4, driving in two runs for Monterrey with a fifth-inning triple and a single in the seventh.
Charros de Jalisco 2, Yaquis de Obregon 1 – Manny Banuelos threw seven innings, allowing two runs on one hit, striking out four and walking four for Jalisco, which improved to 34-26 overall. Jose Aguilar hit a solo homer in the fourth, sending himself home to score the go-ahead run.
Caneros de Los Mochis 5, Mayos de Navojoa 3 – Yasmany Tomas hit his league-leading 12th homer of the year, a solo homer in the eighth, and Kyle Martin hit a three-run shot in the fourth as Los Mochis topped Navojoa. Joe Stewart hit a two-run homer for the Mayos, who are 8-17 in the second half and tied with Monterrey for ninth place.
Naranjeros de Hermosillo 5, Algodoneros de Guasave 4 (11 Innings) – Jose Cardona, Angel Camacho, and Reivaj Garcia each hit RBI singles in the bottom of the 11th as the Naranjeros scored three runs to erase a two-run deficit and take the series opener from Guasave. Alex Dickerson hit his fifth homer of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, to give Hermosillo a 1-0 lead, and starter Wilmer Rios scattered six hits over seven innings of work, allowing one earned run and striking out five.
Aguilas de Mexicali 5, Venados de Mazatlan 0 – Mazatlan managed just three hits and drew one walk against the Aguilas pitching staff, getting just two runners into scoring position in the loss. Mexicali (13-12 second half) starter David Reyes threw seven innings, allowing two hits, a walk, and fanning seven to earn the win.
