LAMP: That’s Not a Great Way to End A Game; Urquidy Among Several Players To Get MLB Deals

Friday night in Los Mochis, the Caneros de Los Mochis had the game meet a difficult ending.

It was 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th, the Charros de Jalisco were leading after getting a sacrifice fly from Francisco Cordoba and a two-run single from Bligh Madras in the top of the 10th. The Caneros were just a run away from tying the game after Rodolfo Amador hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th.

With two outs, Alejandro Urias was at bat. He represented the tying run and had a full count. Charros reliever Trevor Clifton fired a curveball that Urias swung on and missed, but Cordoba, the Jalisco catcher, couldn’t handle it, and it went to the backstop. Urias broke for first on the dropped third strike, only to be called out for interference when the batboy picked up the baseball, ending the game.

Jose Urquidy Headed To Arizona – Venados de Mazatlan starter Jose Urquidy, who has been one of the best pitchers in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico this season, signed a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Emmanuel Campa. The deal means that his season in the LAMP is over so he can work toward his return to the Major Leagues with the Diamondbacks. Urquidy threw 33 innings with a 1.09 ERA over six starts, striking out 35, walking seven, and posting a 0.848 WHIP.

The Mazatlan native made two appearances in MLB last season with Detroit, posting a 7.71 ERA in 2 1/3 innings, but has a 4.00 ERA over 407 1/3 innings with Houston and Detroit from 2019-25.

Carlos Medina Signs With San Diego Padres – Culiacan, Sinaloa-native Carlos Medina has signed with the San Diego Padres after a solid season as a 20-year-old with the Caneros thus far. He’s thrown 21 1/3 innings in 21 appearances with a 2.95 ERA, a 1.266 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts against just eight walks.

Daniel Duarte To The New York Mets – Daniel Duarte, 28, made 36 appearances with Cincinnati and Minnesota from 2022-24, but underwent elbow surgery in May 2024 and missed the entire 2025 MLB season. He’s earned himself a minor league deal with an MLB spring training invitation after 20 2/3 sensational innings with the Caneros de Los Mochis, where he’s posted a 0.00 ERA in 20 2/3 innings, striking out 16 and walking four.

Player of the Week – Orlando Martinez of the Tomateros de Culiacan was named the LAMP player of the week after batting .391 with two homers and 12 RBIs, leading the Tomateros to a 5-1 record. The Cuban is experiencing his first season in the LAMP after playing in the LBPRC in Puerto Rico for the Criollos de Caguas last winter and the Cangrejeros de Santurce in 2023-24. Other POTW nominees were J.P. Martinez of the Tomateros, who batted .333 with four homers and five RBIs last week, and Willie Calhoun of the Naranjeros de Hermosillo who batted .500 with three homers and seven RBIs.

Pitcher of the Week – Brandon Brennan of the Yaquis de Obregon was named pitcher of the week after throwing 12 innings and allowing only two runs, striking out eight and posting an ERA of 1.50 last week. Also nominated were Paul Campbell of the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, who threw 10 innings and allowed two runs and struck out eight in two starts, and Manny Bañuelos of the Charros de Jalisco, who threw six scoreless innings and struck out four in one start.

Reliever of the Week – Hermosillo native Alan Rangel earned three holds in four innings of work, striking out four and posting a 0.00 ERA with a 1.250 WHIP last week. Rangel made his MLB debut last year, appearing in five games with Philadelphia, posting a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings and earning a save. Also nominated were Anthony Gose of the Tomateros de Culiacán, who had two saves and four strikeouts, throwing 3 1/3 innings, and Jake Sánchez of the Aguilas de Mexicali, who earned two saves in two opportunities, throwing three innings and striking out four.
