LAMP: Tomateros de Culiacan Keep Finding the Special Sauce, Win Sixth Straight

Tomateros de Culiacan (26-20) 6, Yaquis de Obregon (27-19) 3 – The Tomateros kept a half-game lead in the second half standings with their sixth straight win. Joey Meneses had an RBI double in the first and a sac fly in the seventh to drive in two runs, and Luis Verdugo hit a two-run homer in the seventh for Culiacan, which has yet to lose under new manager Lorenzo Bundy. Starter Aldo Montes threw five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Allen Cordoba went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for Obregon.

Jaguares de Nayarit (27-18) 10, Aguilas de Mexicali (23-22) 6 – Ricardo Valenzuela hit a three-run homer, his sixth dinger of the year, Jesse Castillo hit a tow-run homer in the ninth, and Jacob Rhinesmith drove in two runs with a single in the fifth that started a seven-run rally as the Jaguares improved to 7-3 in the second half. Yadir Drake hit his sixth homer of the winter for Mexicali, a three-run shot in the second that got the Aguilas otu to a 4-0 lead that didn’t hold up.

Caneros de Los Mochis (27-19) 6, Tucson Baseball Team (15-31) 5 – Los Mochis scored six in the bottom of the first behind Eric Filia’s two-run double and a two-run homer from Yasmany Tomas and held on for the one-run win. Jesus Fabela and Ramon Mendoza each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, hitting two-run singles as the Baseball Team rallied for four runs in the seventh but ultimately fell short.

Naranjeros de Hermosillo (25-21) 8, Charros de Jalisco (25-21) 7 – TT Bowens hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third and had five RBIs in the win as Hermosillo won to keep pace with Jalisco in the second half. Willie Calhoun went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Michael Wielansky went 3-for-5, stole home, hit a two-run homer, and drove in four runs for Jalisco.

Algodoneros de Guasave (18-29) 8, Venados de Mazatlan (16-30) 1 – Leo Heras hit his eighth homer of the season, driving the first pitch of the game over the right field wall, and added a two-run shot in the ninth to tie for the league lead. Heras finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Drew Avans added a two-run shot as Guasave improved to 7-4 in the second half.
