Tucson Baseball Team (1-2) 5, Naranjeros de Hermosillo (2-1) 1 – Playing their second quasi-home game in Hermosillo, Tuscon got its first win of the season behind a solid start from Raul Carrillo and another good night at the plate from Gaige Howard. Carrillo went five innings, allowing one run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Howard went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Hermosillo’s lone run came from a solo homer by TT Bowens in the second inning.
Jaguares de Nayarit (2-1) 7, Caneros de Los Mochis (2-1) 5 – The Jaguares put up seven runs in top of the third inning, getting three-run homers from Marcos Castañon and Jose Felix, then hanging on as the Caneros mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Down to their final three outs, Los Mochis got an RBI double from Dayson Croes to get on the board, and then Rodolfo Amador drew a bases-loaded walk from. A ground out by Yasmany Tomás scored Marco Jaime, and Asael Sanchez’ two-out, two-run single got the Caneros within two runs. With Sanchez on first, Leonys Martin came to the plate as the potential tying run, but lined out to center field on the second pitch to end the game.
Yaquis de Obregon (1-2) 1, Venados de Mazatlan (1-2) 0 – Aríel Miranda threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits, no walks, and striking out five, and an RBI single by Alfredo Hurtado scored Miguel Guzman with the game’s only run as the Yaquis picked up their first win of the year. Starter Jorge Solano went six innings, allowing a single run on five hits with a strikeout and five walks, taking a loss despite giving Obregon a quality start.
Tomateros de Culiacan (2-1) 3, Aguilas de Mexicali (1-2) 2 – Former New York Yankee Luis Cessa threw six innings, allowing three hits, one run, striking out nine and walking none for the Tomateros, picking up a no-decision, but Culiacan got the win in the bottom of the ninth, tying the game with an RBI single by Fernando Villegas and winning when Ichiro Cano drew a bases-loaded walk. Gilberto Vizcarra hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth for Mexicali.
Charros de Jalisco (2-1) 7, Algodoneros de Guasave (1-2) 6 – Bligh Madris went 3-for-4 with five RBIs as the Charros edged the Algodoneros in a wild back-and-forth game. Madris drove in two runs in the third with a single, another with a triple in the fifth, and two more with a seventh-inning double. Anthony Garcia tied the game at six apiece in the top of the eighth with a two-run homer, but a wild pitch by Jonathan Haab in the bottom of the eighth allowed Jared Serna to scamper home with the winning run.
