LBPRC Holds Rookie Draft; Brewers RHP Prospect Jarrette Bonet Selected First

The Liga Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente, Puerto Rico’s professional winter league, held the 2025 Sorteo de Novatos on Monday, with each team drafting rookies with ties to the island.

With the first pick in the draft, the Gigantes de Carolina selected Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Jarrette Bonet, a right-hander born in Manati, Puerto Rico. Bonet, 20, pitched in 11 games with Trenton (N.J.) of the MLB Draft League, throwing 13 1/3 innings with a 6.75 ERA, 19 strikeouts, and 11 walks before signing with Milwaukee as a free agent on July 25.

The Leones de Ponce selected Miami Marlins catching prospect Chris Arroyo with the second pick. The Caguas, P.R.-native played 20 games with Low-A Jupiter of the Florida State League this summer, going 15-for-68 with a homer and seven RBIs, and also played 49 games at the University of Virginia, batting .291 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs.

Gustavo Melendez, a shortstop from Cayey, P.R., was taken third by the Criollos de Caguas. Melendez, 17, was taken in the fourth round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates and has yet to appear in a professional game.

The Senadores de San Juan selected New York Mets infield prospect Antonio Jimenez with the fourth pick. Jimenez, 21, batted .329/.407/.545 with a 982 OPS, 11 homers and 51 RBIs with Central Florida of the Big 12 Conference before the Mets took him in the third round of the 2025 MLB Draft. He was assigned to St. Lucie of the Florida State League, where he went 25-for-95 in 26 games at Low-A.

Nineteen-year-old shortstop Yamvier Carrero of Cidra, P.R. was the fifth overall pick, selected by the Cangrejeros de Santurce. Carrero signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Braves on July 25 and has yet to appear in a game as a professional.

The final pick of the first round was right-handed pitcher Joshua Flores, 18, who had committed to the University of Kentucky before he was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth round of the 2025 MLB Draft. He signed with Milwaukee on July 23 and has yet to appear in a professional game.
