LBPRC: José Abreu on Fire; Indios de Mayagüez Score 24 Runs in Two Days

 Conor Liguori - World Baseball Network  |    Nov 19th, 2024 6:00pm EST

There were plenty of fireworks around the LBPRC this weekend, including an offensive onslaught from the Indios de Mayagüez and a walk-off celebration for the Gigantes de Carolina over the Cangrejeros de Santurce. There were no games on the schedule for Monday, November 18.

Here’s everything else you missed from this weekend and how each of the league’s six organizations performed.

Indios de Mayagüez (4-1, First Place)

The Indios went 2-0 this weekend, winning 17-4 against the Senadores de San Juan on Saturday and 7-5 against the Cangrejeros de Santurce on Sunday.

Shed Long Jr., Danny Ortiz, Anthony Garcia, and Alan Marrero provided three RBI each for the Indios in the win on Saturday, and starting pitcher Daryl Thompson threw five innings of one-run ball on Sunday to help lead the Indios to a 7-5 win, their fourth victory of the season.

Third baseman Emmanuel Rivera leads the LBPRC with an absurd .684 batting average with 13 hits in 19 at-bats.

Senadores de San Juan (4-2, Second Place)

After a demoralizing 17-4 loss to the Indios de Mayagüez on Saturday, the Senadores quickly regrouped to defeat the Gigantes de Carolina 9-3 on Sunday.

José Abreu connected for his third home run of the year on Friday and hit his league-leading fourth home run in the top of the eighth on Sunday, a two-run blast over the left field wall to extend the Senadores’ lead to 9-3 against the Gigantes. Catcher Jan Mercado went 3-for-5 with a solo home run on Sunday.

Gigantes de Carolina (3-3, Third Place)

Outfielder Jan Hernandez hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning at Estadio Roberto Clemente Walker on Saturday to defeat the Cangrejeros de Santurce 7-6. Starting pitcher Shintaro Fujinami allowed two earned runs in four innings.

Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks’ pitcher Fuga Ohtake struggled in his start for the Gigantes on Sunday, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 3.1 innings in the 9-3 loss to the Senadores de San Juan.

Criollos de Caguas (2-2, Fourth Place)

The Criollos did not play on Saturday but held on to a one-run lead in the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the Leones de Ponce for a 3-2 win.

The Criollos used eight pitchers against the Leones, including former Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles reliever Travis Lakins. Lakins threw three scoreless innings for the Criollos and has not allowed a run in his two appearances this season. First baseman Jonathan Morales provided all three runs for the Criollos on Sunday, hitting a two-run double in the top of the second and an RBI single in the sixth.

Leones de Ponce (2-4, Fifth Place)

The Leones defeated the Cangrejeros de Santurce 3-0 on Friday, but the offense went quiet on Sunday, scoring just two runs on seven hits in a 3-2 loss to the Criollos de Caguas.

Cuban outfielder Yanquiel Fernández will be an intriguing player to watch this season for the Leones. The 21-year-old is the Colorado Rockies’ No. 4 overall prospect (MLB.com) and has a .979 OPS with two home runs in six games.

Cangrejeros de Santurce (1-4, Sixth Place)

The Cangrejeros continue to falter, going 0-2 this weekend, losing to the Gigantes de Carolina and Indios de Mayagüez.

The offense scored six runs against the Gigantes and five to the Indios, but the pitching staff has yet to enjoy the same success. As it stands, the Cangrejeros own a run differential of -6. Catcher Ruben Castro has started the 2024-25 season hot with the bat, picking up eight hits with just two strikeouts in 24 plate appearances.
