After being released by the Houston Astros after a disappointing 2024 season, Jose Abreu is looking towards playing in 2025, signing with the Senadores de San Juan in Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente (LBPRC).
It was a very disappointing 2024 for Abreu. In 35 games with the Astros this season, he only hit .124, with two home runs and seven RBIs. He was only able to muster 13 hits in 113 at-bats, walking four times and striking out 28 times. He signed a three-year contract worth $58.5M in 2023 to join the Houston Astros. He would be released on June 14.
The 37-year-old began his MLB career with the White Sox in 2014 after signing as a free agent from Cuba. Abreu won the American League Rookie of the Year Award that year, where he hit 36 home runs and 107 RBIs, hitting for a .317 average in 145 games. That same season, Abreu was also an All-Star and brought home his first Silver Slugger.
Throughout his White Sox tenure, he played in 1,270 games, hit 243 home runs, and drove in 863 RBIs, with a career .292 average. He was also a three-time All-Star, Silver Slugger Award winner, and won the American League MVP Award in 2020. During the shortened 2020 season, Abreu played in all 60 games, leading the league with 76 hits, crushing 19 home runs, and a league-leading 60 RBIs.
It will be interesting to see if Abreu can make a comeback this winter, as he will get most of his reps at first base while potentially serving as a designated hitter for the Senadores. The Senadores kick off their season in early November, so seeing Abreu back in action will be great.
