Left-Handed Starting Pitcher Patrick Sandoval Agrees To Two-Year Deal Worth $18.25M With Boston

The Boston Red Sox signed left-handed starting Patrick Sandoval to a two-year deal worth $18.25 million, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on December 20.  

Passan also stated that Sandoval is expected to come back in the second half of the 2025 regular season from Tommy John surgery.

Sandoval landed on the 60-day injured list on June 25, 2024 after sustaining a left elbow strain forcing him to miss the rest of the season alongside the Los Angeles Angels ending the year in last place of the American League West Division at 63-39 under manager Ron Washington.  

Last season in Southern California, Sandoval went 2-8 in 16 starts, posting a 5.08 ERA, throwing 79.2 innings, allowing 85 hits, 45 earned runs, eight home runs, 35 walks, 81 strikeouts, and a 1.506 WHP.  

In the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Sandoval played for Mexico and won the Bronze medal after helping the nation reach the semifinals in Miami at loanDepot Park and losing to Japan 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning from Munetaka Murakami’s game winning double.  

Sandoval was selected to the 2023 WBC All-WBC Team with going 1-0 in his two starts, posting a 1.23 ERA, throwing 7.1 innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, three walks, and eight strikeouts.  

The 28-year old from Mission Viejo, Calif., has played six seasons with the Angels from 2019-24 and posted a lifetime record of 19-45 with a 4.01 ERA in 107 appearances and 100 starts, throwing one complete game, one shutout, one save, chucking 536 innings, allowing 510 hits, 239 earned runs, 55 home runs, 236 walks, 529 strikeouts, and a 1.392 WHIP.  

Boston ended the 2024 season under manager Alex Cora with their record at 81-81 in third place in AL East Division.  

The Red Sox pitching staff last season, between their starting rotation and bullpen used 34 pitchers and posted a 13.1 WAR with a 4.05 ERA, one complete game, one shutout, 40 saves, throwing 1,452.2 innings pitched, allowing 1,363 hits, 654 earned runs,189 home runs, 461 walks, 1,353 strikeouts, and a 1.256 WHIP.  

Sandoval will compete in the starting rotation in the 2025 Grapefruit League season with Garrett Grochet, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Brayan Bello, Garrett Whitlock, and Lucas Giolito.  

The Red Sox will open up spring training against the Northeastern University Huskies on February 21 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla prior to opening the 2025 regular season on the road against the Texas Rangers at 4:05 p.m. EDT on March 27.
