LIDOM: Estrellas Orientales Outslug Gigantes del Cibao Behind Miguel Sanó’s Two Homers

LIDOM Sano and Estrellas Orientales Are Undefeated After Season’s First Week

Estrellas Orientales (16-19) 7, Gigantes del Cibao (13-19) 5 – On Wednesday night, the Estrellas Orientales and Gigantes del Cibao traded shots in a fiercely contested matchup.

Miguel Sanó finished the night 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Estrellas, who are still three games under .500.

Luis García Jr. ripped a ground-rule double to right, driving in Johan Rojas to put a run on the board in the bottom of the first.

In the fourth inning, Sanó launched a line-drive home run to left field for his eighth of the season, while Josh Lester followed with a towering home run to right-center for his fourth.

Sanó added his ninth home run of the season with a fly-ball shot to left-center, bringing home Ismael Munguia in the fifth inning for a 5-2 Estrellas lead.

Carlos Martínez lined a sharp single to center, driving in Raimel Tapia and Jorge Mateo to extend the lead to 7-2 in the top of the sixth.

Kelvin Gutiérrez, who went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, lifted a fly ball to right-center for a ground-rule double, his fourth of the season, bringing home Gary Sánchez for the Gigantes.

Toros del Este (18-15) 7, Leones del Escogido (14-19) 4 – Jeimer Candelario added a 2-for-4 performance with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored, and Bryan De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a .429 batting average.

In the top of the second, Jonathan Guzmán delivered a ground-ball single to left fielder Allan Castro, driving in Sócrates Brito and Eguy Rosario to make it 2-0 Leones. Chadwick Tromp followed with a sharp ground-ball single to shortstop Welbyn Francisca, bringing home Jonathan Guzmán.

Jeimer Candelario ripped a huge line-drive triple to right, his first of the season, driving in Eloy Jiménez in the second to get the Toros on the board.

Two innings later, Candelario lined a ground-ball single to left, driving in Bryan De La Cruz and Allan Castro in the bottom of the fifth to give the Toros a 5-3 lead. Tres Barrera dropped a sacrifice bunt to score Eloy Jimenez, and then Welbyn Francisca lined a ground-ball single to right fielder Héctor Rodríguez, bringing home Candelario to make it 7-3. 

Rodríguez launched a two-run home run to right field for his second of the season.

Héctor Rodríguez went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, an RBI and a run scored for the Leones.

Águilas Cibaeñas (24-8) 4, Tigres del Licey (14-19) 2 – , Leody Taveras went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI as the Aguilas won for the 24th time this season.

David Hensley hit a triple to right field, his first of the season, driving in Mel Rojas Jr. to give the Tigres a 1-0 lead in the bottom of teh second. Hayden Senger lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing David Hensley to score later in the inning.

In the top of the third, Aderlin Rodríguez drilled a line-drive single to left field, driving in Webster Rivas and Steward Berroa. Jerar Encarnacion smoked a ground-ball single to left field, driving in Ezequiel Duran to give the Aguilas a 3-2 lead.

Leody Taveras ripped a line-drive single to right field, driving in Alfredo Reyes to make it 4-2.

David Hensley went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, an RBI and a run scored for Licey.
