LIDOM Recap: Three Doubleheaders, Gigantes Dominate

#1 Doubleheader Game 1

Gigantes del Cibao (18-25) 8, Toros del Este (25-18) 1 – On a busy Tuesday night, Dec. 16, the Gigantes del Cibao set the tone early and never let up, delivering a complete and commanding performance against the Toros del Este.

Samad Taylor went 1-for-1 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base, while Steven Moyers worked five innings of two-hit, one-run ball with four strikeouts. The Toros’ Justin Courtney had a dominant 7 1/3 inning performance, allowing just two hits and one earned run while fanning five. After the Courtney existed the game, the Gigantes were able to blow the game open. 

Yairo Muñoz hit his second home run of the season, sending a towering fly ball to center field that energized the crowd and shifted momentum.

Gary Sánchez lined a double to left field, driving in Julio Carreras and Kelvin Gutiérrez for a two-run boost. 

Luis García Jr. followed with a sharp single to left field, bringing home Kenny Piper and Melvin Mercedes as the offense continued to roll. 

Samad Taylor then infield singled on a ground ball to Toros’ shortstop Rafael Lantigua, driving in García Jr. and Nomar Mazara to cap a productive inning. 

Marco Hernández added a fly-ball double to right field, scoring Taylor for another run.

Doubleheader Game 2

Gigantes del Cibao (19-25) 11, Toros del Este (25-19) 8 – In their second game Tuesday night, the Gigantes del Cibao controlled the pace of a high-scoring affair, outmatching the Toros del Este with steady offense and sharp pitching.

Gary Sánchez went 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs, two walks and two runs scored, while Luis García Jr. went 4-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two RBIs and two runs. Juan Brito added a 2-for-4 performance with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored to the offensive showcase as well. 

In the bottom of the first, García Jr. hit his first home run of the season, a fly ball to right-center field that scored both he and Pablo Reyes.

Sánchez hit his third home run of the season, a fly ball to left field that drove in Carlos Franco.

In the top of the fourth, Jeimer Candelario hit his second home run of the season, a fly ball to right-center field that drove in Juan Brito and Francisco Urbaez.

Allan Castro hit his first home run of the season, a fly ball to right-center field that brought Gilberto Celestino home in the top of the fifth.

Bryan Lavastida hit his first home run of the season, a fly ball to left field that energized the crowd and gave his team a momentum boost.

#2 Doubleheader Game 1

Águilas Cibaeñas (30-13) 5, Leones del Escogido (19-25) 2 – Tuesday was a leaguewide doubleheader night, and the Águilas Cibaeñas displayed their dominance this regular season with a commanding performance that kept the Leones del Escogido on their heels.

Leody Taveras went 1-for-2 with three walks, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases for the Aguilas and Jonathan Guzmán went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run for the Leones. Guzmán hit his second home run of the season, a line drive to left field.

In the top of the seventh, Taveras singled on a ground ball to left fielder Franchy Cordero, driving in Webster Rivas

Jerar Encarnación singled on a line drive to center fielder Junior Lake, driving in Alfredo Reyes.

Alberto Rodríguez singled on a line drive to right fielder Sócrates Brito, driving in Taveras. 

Yainer Díaz hit his first double of the season, a sharp ground ball to left fielder Alberto Rodríguez that drove in Erik González.

#2 Doubleheader Game 2

Leones del Escogido (20-25) 8, Águilas Cibaeñas (30-14) 5 – In the second game of Tuesday night’s doubleheader, Leones del Escogido displayed a potent offense and relentless focus, defeating Águilas Cibaeñas.

Robert Moore went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and a run scored, Steward Berroa went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases, and Angel Sánchez pitched three innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs while striking out three.

Sócrates Brito singled on a line drive to left fielder Juan Lagares, driving in Junior Lake in the bottom of the third.

Robert Moore launched his second home run of the season to right field in the top of the fourth inning, electrifying the crowd and putting his team in motion.

Juan Lagares singled to center field, sending Aderlin Rodríguez home and fueling his team’s drive, and José Marmolejos doubled to right field, driving in Sócrates Brito and Elier Hernández to ignite a key rally.

Jimmy Paredes followed with a sensational triple to right field, sending Marmolejos home and sparking a roar from the crowd as momentum shifted instantly.

Moore crushed a double to center field, driving in Steward Berroa and electrifying the stadium with the clutch hit to seal the game.

#3 Doubleheader Game 1

Estrellas Orientales (19-25) 4, Tigres del Licey (19-24) 2 – Tuesday’s doubleheader night delivered plenty of drama as the Estrellas Orientales showcased their offensive firepower and kept the Tigres del Licey on their toes from first pitch to final out.

Ismael Munguia went 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBIs and a run scored, Rodolfo Castro went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, an RBI and a run scored, and Patrick Weigel pitched an inning and a third scoreless, allowing no hits while striking out three.

Francisco Mejía doubled to right field, driving in Luis Barrera and Gustavo Núñez to ignite a key rally in the top of the third.

Rodolfo Castro launched a towering solo home run to left field in the third, thrilling the crowd. But later on in the game with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Castro struck out swinging, leaving the potential rally on hold.

Jorge Mateo rocketed a line-drive triple to center field, driving in Ismael Munguia.

Munguia followed with a line-drive single to right field, bringing both Raimel Tapia and Robinson Canó home and sparking a thrilling offensive surge.

#3 Doubleheader Game 2

Estrellas Orientales (20-25) 4, Tigres del Licey (19-25) 3 – In the second game of Tuesday night’s doubleheader, the Estrellas Orientales lit up the diamond with timely hitting and relentless pressure.

Josh Lester went 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored, Ismael Munguia went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs, and Mel Rojas Jr. was 0-for-1 with four walks and a run scored.

Armando Alvarez doubled to right field, driving in Gustavo Núñez and Mel Rojas Jr. to ignite a key rally.

Josh Lester crushed a towering solo home run to right-center field, sending the ball soaring and giving his team a key boost.

Ronny Mauricio lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Christian Bethancourt to cross home plate and extend the rally.

Vidal Bruján singled on a ground ball to center field, driving in Josh Lester and extending his team’s lead as the crowd erupted. 

Munguia singled on a ground ball to second baseman Gustavo Núñez, bringing home Rodolfo Castro and adding momentum to his team’s rally.
