On Tuesday, LIDOM’s Toros del Este announced they had hired former Major League Baseball slugger Edwin Encarnación to be an advisor to their baseball operations department.
Encarnación is a native of La Romana, Dominican Republic, and played parts of six seasons with LIDOM’s Águilas de Cibaeñas during his 21-year professional baseball career from 2000 to 2020. He also represented the D.R. in the 2008 Caribbean Series.
“I am very happy to be able to work closely with the Toros’ Operations Department, to be able to contribute and also learn from them,” Encarnación said in a statement released by the Dominican winter ball club, translated from Spanish to English. “We have very talented players who have the desire to compete to win, and that will be demonstrated this season.”
In his new role, Encarnación will mentor players on the club’s roster and help the Toros facilitate decisions within the team’s front office. He brings 16 seasons of MLB experience with him to La Romana. This includes three All-Star selections and 424 home runs with the Cincinnati Reds (2005-09), Toronto Blue Jays (2009-16), Cleveland Guardians (2017-18), Seattle Mariners (2019), New York Yankees (2019), and Chicago White Sox (2020).
Since his retirement, Encarnación has made appearances at the Blue Jays’ spring training facility in Dunedin, Fla., to assist the American League East club as an advisor.
The Toros finished the 2024-25 LIDOM season with a 17-32 record, placing them last in the winter league. Their 2025-26 season kicks off on Wednesday, October 15, with a matchup against the Estrellas Orientales.
