Liga Mexicana de Béisbol Latest News and Notes

The Liga Mexicana de Béisbol (LMB) is about two months away from the start of the Playoffs. Teams are starting to reveal who they truly are, and players are moving into the final stretch of the awards races. Here are a couple of headlines from the past week in the LMB.

Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos

After this past week, where they went 6-0, the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos have not only passed the 30-win threshold but are also in first place in the North Division. At 31-19, they lead the Sultanes de Monterrey by 1.5 games in the North.

In the first part of the week, the Tecos made quick work of the Piratas de Campeche with a three-game sweep. Then over the weekend, they took all three games from the Olmecas de Tabasco in a tightly contested series in which every game was decided by three runs or less.

Players like Yadiel Hernandez, Harold Ramirez, and Daniel Mengden have been key contributors for the Dos Laredos surge to first place in the North. They will play the Sultanes in the first week of July in what will be a pivotal matchup for the LMB playoffs.

Cesar Izturis Jr. helps Durango win series, making Héctor Espino Trophy case

The Caliente de Durango wrapped up the week with a series victory over the Tigres de Quintana Roo to move to 24-27 on the season. A big part of that was thanks to middle infielder Cezar Izturis Jr. and the season he has had. In the series clinching 7-6 victory on Saturday, June 14, Izturis Jr. went 2-2 at the plate with two runs scored.

Son of former MLB All-Star Cesar Izturis, the 25-year-old switch hitter spent over six years in the Minor Leagues for the Seattle Mariners. Now, Izturis Jr. is in his first season in the LMB and hasn’t had much trouble adjusting. In 36 games, Izturis Jr. has a slash line of .410/.475/.563. He is third in the league among qualified hitters in batting average and has an OPS of over 1.000. If he is able to continue this pace and Caliente makes a playoff push to get over .500, you could very well see him firmly in the MVP conversation at the end of the season.
