The Leones de Yucatan honored Oscar Rivera before Thursday’s game, retiring the No. 6 jersey of the man who threw the only perfect game in the playoffs in Liga Mexicana de Beisbol history.
Rivera, who pitched for Yucatan from 2003-13, retired all 27 Guerreros de Oaxaca he faced at Parque Kukulkan Alamo on Aug. 7, 2005 without allowing a runner to reach base, authoring one of the greatest moments in the Leones, as well as the league’s, long history. Less than a year later, the lefty threw a no-hitter on July 1, 2006, against the Rojos del Águila de Veracruz.
He wound down his career pitching for Ciudad del Carmen in 2015 and 2016 before joining the Piratas de Campeche for the remainder of 2016 and 2017. In total, Rivera made 329 appearances in the LMB, throwing 1,238 2/3 innings with a 3.57 ERA and 870 strikeouts in 248 appearances.
