Diablos Rojos del Mexico 13, Leones de Yucatan 3 – Jose Marmolejos launched a two-run homer and Juan Carlos Gamboa contributed a solo homer and the Diablos Rojos scored eight runs in the eighth to take game one of the seven-game series easily. Brooks Hall allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings, and Tomohiro Anraku finished off the ninth in a non-save situation for the Diablos. Game two is today at 4 p.m. EDT.
Charros de Jalisco 5, Sultanes de Monterrey 3 – Zac Grotz allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work as the Charros took game one of the series. Mallex Smith doubled home Johneshwy Fargas in the fifth, and Willie Calhoun later drove in Smith to give the Charros a 4-0 lead, which held up despite a three-run rally in the eighth by Monterrey. Game two is Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT.
Guerreros de Oaxaca 18, El Aguila de Veracruz 11 – Nelson Velasquez homered twice for the Guerreros, hitting a two-run shot in the bottom of the first to give Oaxaca a 3-0 lead and then adding a solo shot in the fourth. Despite both teams scoring in the double digits, the game was never close, with the Guerreros never leading by less than five runs after the second. First pitch for game two is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT Sunday.
Toros de Tijuana 7, Algodoneros de Union Laguna 2 – Isaac Rodriguez, Aderlin Rodriguez, and Rangel Ravelo all hit solo homers in the bottom of the first and Tijuana cruised past Union Laguna in game one. David Reyes allowed two runs in five innings of work for the Toros, and five relievers combined to throw four shutout innings, allowing two walks and three hits. Game two starts at 10:35 p.m. EDT Sunday night.
Piratas de Campeche 7, Pericos de Puebla 0 – A six-run bottom of the six powered the Piratas past the Pericos, with Chris Carter hitting a two-run homer in the frame for Campeche. Puebla stranded nine runners and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. They’ll have a chance to even the series Sunday night at 8 p.m. EDT.
Acereros de Monclova 20, Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos 3 – Matt McDermott’s solo homer gave Dos Laredos an early lead, but it didn’t hold, as the Acereros demolished the Tecos in game one. Wilmer Rios allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings of work for Monclova, while the Tecos pitching staff couldn’t stop the Acereros offense, allowing 20 runs on 18 hits and eight walks. Nine of the 20 Monclova runs came off the long ball, with Rodolfo Amador, Magneuris Sierra, Juan Mora, Santiago Chavez, and Aldrem Corred0r each hitting a homer for Monclova. Game two starts at 9 p.m. EDT Sunday evening.
