The Leones de Yucatan announced Sergio Gastelum as their new manager for the 2026 season, bringing in a skipper who won the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol title with the Pericos de Puebla in 2023.

Gastelum served as manager of the Saraperos de Saltillo of the LMB in 2025, finishing in eighth place in the Zona Norte with a 43-49 record. He is currently the bench coach for the Yaquis de Obregon of the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico, Mexico’s winter league.

His managing career began in the summer of 2018 with the Guerreros de Oaxaca, who he led to the Serie del Rey despite the team finishing 26-30 in the bifurcated regular season. The Guerreros lost to the Sultanes de Monterrey four games to two, but the season established Gastelum as a manager on the rise in the league. The following winter, he won the first of two Manager of the Year awards in the LAMP with the Yaquis, where he became the first Mexican-born manager to win 40 games in a LAMP season, and won the award again in 2019-20.

As a player, Gastelum spent 22 season in the LMB with the Tigres Capitalinos and Tigres de Angelopolis, the Algodoneros de Union Laguna, Guerreros de Oaxaca, and Diablos Rojos del Mexico as 12 seasons in the LAMP with the Aguilas de Mexicali, Venados de Mazatlan, Tomateros de Culiacan, and Yaquis de Obregon.
