After spending the winter season with the Yaquis de Obregon in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico, former New York Yankee Luis Cessa will be staying in his native Mexico for the summer of 2025.
Cessa, a native of Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico, has signed with the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol after not receiving an invite to spring training with a Major League Baseball club. He last appeared in MLB with the Cincinnati Reds in 2023, posting a 9.00 ERA over 26 innings of work across seven appearances, making six starts. In 208 career games with the New York Yankees and Reds, Cessa has a 4.43 career ERA in 425 innings of work.
He split the 2024 season between Omaha and Indianapolis, pitching at the Triple-A level in the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations, making 23 starts and throwing 102 2/3 innings over 26 appearances with a 4.73 ERA, 77 strikeouts, and 43 walks.
He rebounded this past winter, making 10 starts for Obregon and throwing 51 2/3 innings with a 2.09 ERA and a 0.929 WHIP.
Tyler Duffey Signs With Durango – Duffey, a veteran of 10 MLB seasons with the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, and Kansas City Royals, signed with the Caliente de Durango this week. He has a 4.57 ERA in 486 innings in MLB, with 479 strikeouts, 145 walks, and a career WHIP of 1.298.
He split 2024 between Triple-A Omaha and the Royals, making 23 appearances in relief with Omaha, where he threw 30 2/3 innings with a 2.35 ERA and a WHIP of 1.141. With Kansas City, Duffey made nine appearances, throwing nine innings witha. 5.00 ERA.
Francisco Pena Is Returning to Campeche – Former MLB catcher Francisco Pena is returning to the Piratas de Campeche in 2025. Pena batted .301/.385/.390 in 90 games with Campeche last year, hitting four homers and driving in 23 runs. The son of former MLB catcher and manager Tony Pena won the Caribbean Series with the Dominican Republic’s Leones del Escogido earlier this month.
