If you’re a manager in the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol at the start of the season, there’s a high likelihood you won’t be managing that team come the end of the season.
Especially this year.
Sixteen of the 20 managers who started the 2025 season at the helm of a team in the LMB have been fired, and success doesn’t necessarily guarantee continued employment. The 16th manager to head to the unemployment line this year was Puebla’s Russell Vasquez, who was fired after 67 games despite leading Puebla to a 34-33 record and second place in the Zona Sur. Of the 16 teams that changed managers to this point in the season, only six are over .500.

With 16 managers already handed pink slips, it’s easier to list which skippers have survived to the season’s quarter-pole: Lorenzo Bundy of the Diablos Rojos del Mexico, Roberto Kelly of the Sultanes de Monterrey, Felix Fermin of the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos, and Benji Gil of the Charros de Jalisco. Those four teams are a combine 168-115 this season and have a .593 combined winning percentage, while the 16 teams that have changed managers over the course of the season are 540-593, good for a .476 winning percentage.
Don Cherry, the former coach of the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins and Colorado Rockies who went on to a long career as a hockey broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, was known to joke, “Why do coaches get hired? To get fired!”
Perhaps nowhere more so, though, than in the LMB.
Tyler Beede Joins Diablos Rojos – It’s hard for fans of the LMB’s other 19 teams to have any sympathy for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico, the franchise that has a big ballpark and deep-pocketed owner. When the Diablos need a player to fill a hole on the roster, they seldom have to scrounge. This past week, the Diablos needed to add a starter, and so they went out and got Tyler Beede, who played parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball and spent 2023 with the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball. Beede started this year with the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks, where he had a 5.81 ERA over 21 1/3 innings across five appearances before heading south of the border. In his Diablos debut, Beede threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with a strikeout in 3-2 loss on the road to the Tigres de Quintana Roo on Sunday. Beede owns a career 5.55 ERA over 201 innings in MLB with the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cleveland Indians.
Hensley Headed to Tabasco – Former Houston Astro David Hensley has gone to the Olmecas de Tabasco after a strong start to the year in Durango. The 6-foot-6 utilityman batted .304/.438/.571 with a 1.008 OPS, 13 homers and 50 RBIs for the Caliente, who’ve struggled to a 30-42 in the Zona Norte in their second season under new ownership. Tabasco, at 30-41, may not have a much better record, but they’re only four games out of a playoff spot in the Zona Sur with 22 games remaining.
Andy Otero Flies to El Aguila – Panamanian winter ball legend Andy Otero has joined El Aguila de Veracruz after a rough first half of the season with the Conspiradores de Queretaro. Otero, 33, threw 41 innings over 11 starts with Queretaro, posting a 9.22 ERA with 29 strikeouts, allowing 15 homers. He’s pitched each of the last five winters for the Estrellas Orientales of LIDOM, pitching for the Dominican Republic in the 2021 and 2024 Caribbean Series, and also represented his native Panama in the 2019 and 2020 Caribbean Series.
Magic Numbers – For the Diablos Rojos del Mexico to claim the Zona Sur title in the 2025 regular season, the Magic Number is 12. Twelve Diablos wins or losses by the Guerreros de Oaxaca and Piratas de Campeche clinches the division title for the Reds, who are likely to claim the divisional crown for the second year in a row.
In the Zona Norte, the Sultanes de Monterrey (45-26) still could find themselves out of the top spot, as they lead the division by five games over the Toros de Tijuana (40-31).
