LMB Playoffs: Games One and Two of Serie del Rey Available To Stream on YouTube

Viewers in the United States can watch the Serie del Rey, the championship series of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, live on YouTube.

Games one and two, which will be played Wednesday, Sept. 10, and Thursday, Sept. 11, at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu in Mexico City, will be streamed live on YouTube by Mexican media outlet Claro Sports.

Righty Luis Payan will take the mound for game one on Wednesday for Jalisco, which advanced to the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol’s championship series by eliminating the Zona Norte’s regular season champion, the Sultanes de Monterrey, in the Serie Campeonato. Payan has thrown 23 1/3 innings over five starts in the postseason, allowing eight runs on 17 hits with 26 strikeouts and nine walks with a 0.890 WHIP. He’ll face Venezuelan right Ricardo Pinto for the Diablos, who has a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings of work across four starts, with 23 strikeouts and eight walks.

When Zac Grotz starts game two for Jalisco, it’ll be his seventh start of the playoffs, during which he’s thrown a league-leading 32 innings with a 3.38 ERA, 25 strikeouts, and four walks. He’ll face the Reds’ Justin Courtney, who has gone 11 1/3 innings in three starts during the postseason, allowing seven runs on 15 hits with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.680 WHIP.

The series will go to Guadalajara for games three, four, and if necessary, game five, on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

It’s Been A While – The Charros de Jalisco are in the Serie del Rey for the first time in 54 years, breaking the longest drought in the league. Having now snapped that drought, the longest runs in the LMB without a trip to the Serie del Rey are those of the Bravos de Leon at 35 years, the Olmecas de Tabasco at 32 years, the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos at 32 years, and the Piratas de Campeche, who are 21 years removed from their last Serie del Rey appearance.

The last time the Charros made the Serie del Rey in 1971, they fell behind the Saraperos de Saltillo three games to none before storming back to win the series in seven games, becoming the first team to erase a 3-0 deficit in a playoff series in league history. The feat has been accomplished four times since, most recently in last year’s Zona Sur Serie Campeonato by the Diablos Rojos del Mexico, who fell behind Oaxaca before winning the last four games of the series, with Trevor Bauer making a heroic relief appearance in game seven to secure a spot in the Serie del Rey.

Starting on the Right Foot – Teams winning game one of the Serie del rey have gone on to win the title  on 33 of 54 occasions, or 61.1% percent of the time. Teams that won game one of the Serie del Rey at home won the title 19 out of 27 times, or 70.3% of the time.

That said, five of the last six champions started with a loss. In 2018, Oaxaca wongame one and lost the series to Monterrey, and a year later, Yucatan won game one but lost to Monclova. In 2021, Yucatan took game one but lost the series to Tijuana, and Monterrey took game one a year later but lost to Yucatan. In 2023, the Algodoneros de Union Laguna won game one and lost to Puebla. The exception was last year, when the Diablos Rojos won game one and took the series from Monterrey.

Where to Watch – All LMB games can be streamed live on MLB.tv for a fee. Games one and two will be streamed live on YouTube by Claro Sports.
