The Liga Mexicana de Beisbol playoffs began with three games in the Zona Norte series on Saturday night.
Algodoneros de Union Laguna 5, Toros de Tijuana 4 (11 innings) – Hendrik Clementina went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, and Aaron Altherr’s single to center field sent Junior Lake scampering home with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning. Jose Torres threw a perfect half inning in the top of the 11th to earn the win for Union Laguna, which leads the series 1-0.
Sultanes de Monterrey 3, Rieleros de Aguascalientes 1 – Julio Teheran threw five innings, allowing just two hits and a walk and striking out four as the Monterrey cruised past Aguascalientes. Christian Villanueva’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth put Monterrey ahead for good, and the Rieleros mustered just three hits and a walk against the Sultanes’ bullpen.
Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos 4, Acereros de Monclova 3 – The Tecos put away the Acereros in game one of the Zona Norte playoff, belting two home runs on Saturday night. Yadiel Hernandez hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth and Kennys Vargas hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Moore’s eighth inning double gave Laredo a 4-1 lead, but former Teco Balbino Fuenmayor’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth drew Monclova within one.
