Sultanes de Monterrey 7, Charros de Jalisco 6 – Gustavo Nunez and Esteban Quiroz each went 3-for-5 with a homer as the Sultanes stormed back from a 5-0 deficit and evened the series, forcing game seven after being down three games to none.
Nuncz scored three runs and drove in two, cranking a solo homer in the second inning. He hit an RBI single in the sixth to tie the game, and later scored the winning run on a single by Josh Lester.
Jalisco starter Luis Ivan Rodriguez lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, three of them home runs, and a walk, but the Sultanes bullpen to allow two runs on four hits over the remaining 7 2/3.
Four Monterrey relievers combined to throw 4 1/3 shutout innings to finish out game six.
Justus Sheffield will start game seven for Monterrey against Jalisco’s Luis Payan tonight at 8 p.m. EDT.
Acereros de Monclova 7, Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos 5 – A five-run sixth inning got Monclova to game seven as they evened the series with Dos Laredos.
Santiago Chavez had a two-run single to start the rally, then Aldrem Corredor, Balbino Fuenmayor, and Kennys Vargas hit consecutive RBI singles to give Monclova a 7-5 lead that held up behind four innings of shut-out relief from the Acereros’ bullpen.
The big inning wasted a solid effort by Dos Laredos starter Daniel Mengden, when went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Game seven is scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT Sunday, with Junior Guerra starting for Dos Laredos against Austin Warner for Monclova.
Algodoneros de Union Laguna 11, Toros de Tijuana 6 – Union Laguna scored seven in the first inning and held on the rest of the way to win the series four games to two and eliminate Tijuana.
Brian O’Grady and Hendrik Clementina each went 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Algodonderos, each hitting a three-run shot in the first inning.
The Toros’ offense produced in the early innings as well, with Hernan Perez hitting a solo homer in the first and Rangel Ravelo hitting a two-run homer later in the opening frame, but after Union Laguna starter Grant Gavin left the game, the Toros couldn’t muster much offense of the Algodoneros’ bullpen, with six relievers combining to throw 6 1/3 shutout innings.
The Algodoneros will be off until the second round of the playoffs, which start next week.
