The Leones de Yucatan will be without two key pitchers for the remainder of the second round series against the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol playoffs.
Elian Leyva was suspended for four games and fined an undisclosed amount and Lisandro Santos was suspended for eight games and also received a fine, making Santos ineligible for the remainder of the series and Leyva unable to return until a potential game seven. Mexico City leads the series against Yucatan two games to none.
Leyva and Santos were suspended after headhunting in game two, which began Friday evening, was suspended due to rain, and completed on Saturday afternoon.
Leyva was on the mound in the top of the fifth, facing Mexico City’s Franklin Barreto, and his 1-0 offering hit Barreto in the face. After Yucatan catcher Webster Rivas exchanged words with Mexico City manager Lorenzo Bundy, the benches emptied. Leyva was ejected prior to the next batter, Robinson Cano, stepping into the box, and was replaced by Santos.
