LMB’s Guerreros de Oaxaca Break Ground On New 8,000-Seat Ballpark

Dignitaries gathered in Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico yesterday, where a new ballpark is under construction for the Guerreros de Oaxaca of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol.

At a press event attended by baseball and political officials, the first stone for the new home of the Guerreros was laid in Oaxaca de Juarez. The ballpark will be the first 100% sustainable stadium in Mexico, according to a press release issued by the Guerreros, the LMB, and the Alfredo Harp Helu Foundation, which owns the Guerreros and the Diablos Rojos del Mexico.

“I am very pleased to be able to announce this project. It is something that all Oaxacans deserve, since they are loyal fans of the Guerreros,” Alfredo Harp Helu said in a press release. “We need to have the best for Oaxaca and this stadium is a marvel and ideal for the Oaxacan city. We will continue supporting more sports and it is clear that the best complement to education is sports.”

The design of the ballpark includes cisterns for rainwater recovery and a treatment system for use in irrigation, as well as low-consumption lighting systems that make the stadium environmentally friendly.

“The new home of the Guerreros will have a capacity of 8,000, in addition to 18 boxes that will offer a unique experience to our followers,” said Guillermo Spíndola Morales, executive president of the Guerreros de Oaxaca, in a press release. “But the highlight is the baseball field, built with top quality synthetic materials, which will not only improve the performance of the game, but will also contribute to sustainability by reducing water consumption. The sports facilities of the teams will meet the highest standards at the level of the Mexican League and the Major Leagues, ensuring a professional and competitive environment for our players.”

The Guerreros currently play in Estadio Eduardo Vasconcelos, which was built in 1950 for the Benito Juarez Autonomous University of Oaxaca and seats 7,200. It has been renovated twice, in 1996 and 2008, and has been home to the Guerreros since they entered the LMB in 1996.
