Louisville Defeats Miami 3-2; Advances to the College World Series for the Sixth Time

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –  In a grueling defensive battle, Louisville took down Miami 3-2 to win the Louisville super regional and advance to the College World Series, winning the third and final game of the Louisville super regional.

Max Galvin Homers to put Miami up Early, Louisville Responds – In the third inning, Miami left fielder Max Galvin hit a home run to put the Hurricanes up 2-0 early in the game.

Through four innings, the Hurricanes found offense with good at-bats as they had five hits.

In the fourth inning, Louisville responded with two runs in the fourth inning. Zion Rose hit an RBI double to get the Cardinals on the board. Then, second baseman Bayram Hot beat out a throw to first base to score the tying run.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the fifth inning.

Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell complimented Miami’s play throughout the game as they were able to hang neck-and-neck with his team.

“They [Miami] don’t swing out of the zone,” McDonnell said. “They use the whole field and are really good with two strikes…I want to congratulate them. I’m proud to be in the same conference as them.”

Eddie King Jr. Breaks the Tie, Jake Schweitzer Earns the Win – After no scoring for two and a half innings, Eddie King Jr. came up big once again with an RBI  double in the seventh inning. This gave Louisville a 3-2 lead.

Jake Schweitzer came in to relieve Louisville’s starting pitcher Ethan Eberle. He ended up getting credit for the win. In the three innings he pitched, he gave up just two hits while allowing no runs.

This effort on the mound by Schweitzer kept the game tied and ultimately allowed King Jr.’s hit to be the deciding play, sending Louisville to the College World Series.

The freshman pitcher talked about his relief appearance and credited his teammates for helping him with his big performance.

“My job becomes easier when guys like Ethan [Eberle] go out there and set the tone,” Schweitzer said. “All the credit goes to the guys before me. It makes my job a lot easier to go out there and do my thing.”
