After being released by the Los Angeles Angels last week, Luis Guillorme quickly signed a major league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Venezuelan infielder will head straight to their active roster and be active for today’s game.
The D-Backs optioned infielder Blaze Alexander to Triple-A in the corresponding move. The team also designated relief pitcher Gavin Hollowell for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster.
Guillorme, 29, was drafted by the New York Mets in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Coral Springs Charter School in Florida. After spending six seasons in the minors, Guillorme debuted with the Mets during the 2018 season.
Spending six seasons with the Mets organization, Guillorme played well on New York’s bench, being one of their late-innings options if the team needed to save some runs in the field. In 334 games as a Met, Guillorme hit .261, blasting five home runs, with his on-base percentage at .344.
He signed during the offseason with the Atlanta Braves. Guillorme made his season debut facing the Mets but came in as a pitcher with the Braves behind the Mets in a 16-4 loss. Struggling in nine games with the Braves, only collecting three hits, he would be traded to the Los Angeles Angels a month later.
In 50 games with the Angels, he hit .231, driving in three RBIs, walking 11 times, and holding a .966 fielding percentage.
With the Diamondbacks looking to fight with the Padres for one of the final N.L. Wild Card spot, we will see how Guillorme’s defense can benefit the D-Backs, who look to reappear in the World Series after a fantastic postseason run last October.
