Luis Severino delivered his second complete-game shutout of the season to help the Mets win and move to a game back of wild card position. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB.
Mets 4, Marlins 0
Luis Severino allowed four hits and struck out eight in his second career shutout to help the Mets win their third game in the last four. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso homered in consecutive innings to start the game to lead the charge on offense. New York is one spot out of wild card position.
Pirates 7, Mariners 2
Isiah Kiner-Falefa collected three hits, including a solo home run in the first inning, and the Pirates handed Seattle their fifth straight loss. The Mariners trail the Astros by four games in the AL West.
Tigers 4, Yankees 0
Detroit jumped out to a four-run lead after two innings on Carlos Rodon to take the second game of the series. Spencer Torkelson had a double and a triple in his first game back in the Majors since being sent to Triple-A on June 2. The Yankees remain a game ahead of the Orioles in the AL East.
Cubs 3, Blue Jays 2
Ian Happ homered in the first inning to give Chicago an early lead before Michael Busch drove in two runs with a triple in the fifth to give the Cubs a cushion. Chicago is four games back of a wild card spot in the NL.
Rays 6, Diamondbacks 1
The Rays beat the Diamondbacks for the second straight day, just the second two-game losing streak for Arizona since the all-star break, and gave manager Kevin Cash his 800th win. Jeffrey Springs struck out seven hitters and allowed one run in five innings to slow the Diamondbacks offense.
Phillies 5, Nationals 1
Christopher Sanchez pitched his second complete game this season and allowed just two hits to give the Phillies their fourth straight win. A four-run sixth inning gave Philadelphia the lead and helped them to the win. The Phillies moved past the Dodgers for the top spot in the NL Postseason race.
Royals 13, Reds 1
Dairon Blanco hit two homers, including his first career grand slam, and drove in seven runs to help the Royals to the blowout of Cincinnati and their third straight win. Michael Wacha pitched six shutout innings and struck out nine for his 10th win of the year. Kansas City is two and a half games clear of the Red Sox for the third wild-card spot in the AL.
Red Sox 5, Orioles 1
Brayan Bello took a no-hitter into the sixth and struck out six Orioles hitters to help the Red Sox to the win. Jarren Duran broke the game’s tie with a two-RBI single in the seventh inning. Baltimore is a game back of the Yankees at the top of the AL East, while Boston sits one spot out of wild card position.
Twins 5, Rangers 2
Minnesota won their third straight game in Texas after Willi Castro gave the Twins the lead in the eighth with a bases-clearing single. The Twins trail the Guardians by two games for the AL Central lead after reaching 70 wins.
A’s 2, Giants 0
Osvaldo Bido retired the first 14 hitters he faced and took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before Grant McCray broke it up with an infield single. Lawrence Butler hit a sac fly in the fifth that gave the A’s the lead and proved to be all the club needed. The Giants are three and a half back of the third wild card spot.
Astros 6, White Sox 1
The Astros took the lead after a three-run third inning that started with a two-run single by Jose Altuve. Hunter Brown allowed one run and struck out six in seven innings of work to help Houston with their ninth in the last 10. Houston has a four-game lead over the Mariners for the AL West lead.
Brewers 2, Guardians 1
Milwaukee won their fourth straight thanks to a tie-breaking home run by William Contreras in the fourth inning. The Brewers secured the series win over a fellow division leader. Cleveland’s lead in the AL Central shrunk to two games.
Cardinals 5, Dodgers 2
The Cardinals snapped their five-game losing streak after Winn, Burleson, and Arenado all homered. Alec Burleson gave St. Louis the lead in the third inning on a two-run home run. The Dodgers have a two-game lead over the Padres in the NL West.
Manny Machado had four hits to help the Padres take game two of the series in Colorado. San Diego has won four of five and trails the Dodgers by two games for the NL West lead.
Braves 11, Angels 3
Chris Sale struck out ten and allowed two runs on six hits in six innings for his 14th win of the season. Marcell Ozuna started the scoring with a three-run homer in the first inning to put the Braves on top. Atlanta is a game ahead of the Mets for the final wild-card spot.
