When the Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional’s defending champions, the Cardenales de Lara, take the field Saturday night against the Tiburones de La Guaira, they’ll have a Major Leaguer behind the plate according to a report from 1Baseball.
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno, a native of Barquisimeto, the city the Cardenales call home, will make return to the Cardenales for the first time since 2021-22 on Dec. 6.

Moreno made his Major League Baseball debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022 and appeared in 25 games, batting .319 with a homer and seven RBIs before being dealt to Arizona along with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in exchange for Daulton Varsho that offseason. He’s since played parts of the last three seasons for the Diamondbacks, batting .278/.348/.406 with 21 homers and 135 RBIs in 923 at-bats.
With Lara, he’s played 18 games in each of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, batting .325/.434/.433, two homers, 19 RBIs, and an .865 OPS.
Entering Thursday night’s action, the Cardenales were 19-20 and in fifth place in the LVBP, but just two games back of the first-place Bravos de Margarita.
