The Caribes de Anzoategui will live to play another game, taking a 5-3 victory from Navegantes del Magallanes in Game 3 of the Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional championship series.
Herlis Rodriguez drove in two runs with a first-inning double, the Caribes de Anzoategui got two more in the second on an error, and an RBI double by Jesus Sucre in the third capped the night for the Caribes.
In the second, with the bases loaded and one out, Aldrem Corredor grounded into a fielder’s choice at first, where Magallanes first baseman Eliezer Alfonzo tossed it to shortstop Jose Gomez to start a 3-6-3 double play. Gomez’ return through was horrible, though, and two runs scored on the play.
Five pitchers out of the Caribes bullpen combined to allow two runs on five hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings in relief of starter Emilion Vargas, who who allowed a run on five hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings, striking out five.
Rodriguez went 2-for-4 on the night with a run scored and two RBIs for the Caribes, who cut the Navegantes series lead to a single game. They can even the series with the Navegantes with a win in Game 6, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST Monday evening at Estadio Alfonso Carrasquel in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela.
