LVBP Roundup: Tigres de Aragua, Leones del Caracas Mauling Opponents Early

The 2025-26 Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional season has officially begun, marking the 80th anniversary of Venezuela’s winter league. The season carries added significance, as Venezuela will host the 2026 Caribbean Series.

One of the early stories of the season has been the fast start of the Tigres de Aragua. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Tigres’ last championship. From 2003-16, Aragua was the dominant franchise in the LVBP, winning seven titles and capturing the Caribbean Series crown in 2009 under the leadership of the late Buddy Bailey. No other club since 2000 has won more than four championships.

Since that dynasty ended, however, the Tigres have endured a difficult stretch. They are coming off four straight last-place finishes in the round robin and haven’t placed higher than fifth overall. Aragua has not reached a championship series in the last nine seasons. This year, though, they’ve started fast in an effort to turn things around.

The Tigres’ surge has been powered by their starting rotation, with three of their five starters yet to allow a run. Perhaps the most impressive outing came from Texas Rangers prospect José González, who reached Double-A in 2025. The right-hander tossed four shutout innings with six strikeouts to help Aragua defeat Caribes de Anzoátegui on Friday. The Tigres sit atop the standings at 4-1, the only team with four wins.

Another club off to a quick start is Leones del Caracas, who join Aragua as the only teams with one or fewer losses after the first week of action. While Caracas’ rotation has struggled, their bullpen and offense have carried the load early on. The bullpen owns a 3.17 ERA, and the lineup has produced a team OPS of .902.

Leading the charge offensively has been former Boston Red Sox prospect Brainier Bonaci. The 23-year-old infielder went 5-for-12 with a home run and a walk, showing flashes as one of the league’s most dynamic young players. Bonaci’s play helped propel Caracas to a 3-1 start as the league’s most storied franchise chases its second title since 2011 — and the chance to play in front of home fans during the 2026 Caribbean Series in Caracas.

Meanwhile, Navegantes del Magallanes have stumbled out of the gate in rare fashion. After one of the worst starts in franchise history at 0-3, they managed to avoid a historic 0-4 opening with a win in their final game of the week. It’s just the fourth time in club history that Magallanes has started 0-3, and they have never started 0-4.

Despite a deep pitching staff, the offense has sputtered with a team OPS of .598. Seven players have one hit or fewer. While the lineup includes potential MVP candidates Renato Núñez and Ángel Reyes, the club will need more production from the bottom half of the order to prevent a short slump from turning into something worse.

Núñez, the 2024-25 LVBP MVP and the first player in league history to record 20 home runs and 60 RBIs in a season, has started strong once again. He owns a .989 OPS with one homer and no strikeouts so far, and he should remain among the league’s elite hitters this winter.

There are no games scheduled for Monday, but action resumes Tuesday night.
