LVBP Roundup: Tigres Grabs Final Wild Card Spot, Tiburones and Leones Eliminated

In the final week of the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional regular season, every team entered with round-robin hopes still alive. Even Leones del Caracas, alone in last place, had a chance to reach the wild card series as late as the second-to-last night of the season.

Caracas needed two wins and help in its final two games and hosted Cardenales de Lara in a two-game set. On Friday, Leones jumped out to a 6-3 lead before Lara flipped the game with home runs from Jesús Bastidas and Yohendrick Pinango, along with two three-run homers from Danry Vásquez.

The Cardenales held on for a 15-13 win, clinching the top spot in the regular-season standings. During the game, Leones were officially eliminated from round-robin contention after the Tigres de Aragua won earlier in the night.

Also on Friday, Navegantes del Magallanes and Tiburones de La Guaira met in a crucial matchup with both teams still fighting for postseason seeding. Magallanes took the lead immediately on a leadoff home run by Carlos Rodríguez on the first pitch of the game. Ronald Acuña Jr. answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, but Magallanes broke the game open with an eight-run second inning. Luis Sardiñas hit a two-run homer, Rougned Odor delivered a two-run double and Renato Núñez added a solo homer. Navegantes cruised to a 17-6 win in La Guaira, clinching a spot in the round robin and pushing Tiburones to the brink of elimination.

The Bravos de Margarita and Tigres de Aragua also played a must-win game Friday, with the Tigres needing a victory to stay alive. The game remained scoreless through nine innings before Bravos took a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the 10th. What was initially ruled a walk-off two-run single by Jermaine Palacios was overturned after review when José Peraza was ruled out at the plate, keeping the game tied 1-1. Leobaldo Cabrera later drew a bases-loaded walk to give Tigres a 2-1 win and a major boost to their wild-card hopes.

On Saturday, the final day of the regular season, every team except Leones del Caracas was mathematically alive. The final wild-card spot came down to Tigres de Aragua and Tiburones de La Guaira, while several teams still sought to secure top-four positions.

Águilas del Zulia hosted Caribes de Anzoátegui needing a win to lock down a round-robin berth. Trailing 5-0 after six innings, Águilas mounted a stunning comeback. Home runs by Alí Castillo and Isaías Tejeda cut the deficit to 5-4. Two errors, a bases-loaded walk and a grand slam by Castillo turned a one-run deficit into a 12-5 lead. Águilas went on to win 14-7 to clinch a top-four spot.

Águilas’ run to the round robin was one of the biggest surprises of the season. They finished with a league-worst minus-76 run differential, nearly 40 runs worse than the next lowest team. Historically, such numbers point to a last-place finish rather than a top-four berth, but Águilas defied the odds throughout the season.

The final wild-card berth was decided in Aragua, where Tigres hosted Bravos de Margarita on the season’s final night. Tigres needed a win to clinch. Bravos jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Tigres tied the game on RBI singles by Jermaine Palacios and Yadiel Hernández. José Peraza gave Tigres a 4-3 lead in the sixth before Alexi Amarista tied it in the seventh.

In the bottom of the 10th, Tigres loaded the bases with one out, but Michell Miliano induced a double play to escape. Bravos took a 5-4 lead in the 11th on an RBI single by Breyvic Valera, only for Lorenzo Cedrola to answer with an RBI single in the bottom half.

That set the stage for Gorkys Hernández. He drove a center-cut fastball into the gap for a one-hop, game-winning double, scoring Cedrola and giving Tigres a dramatic 6-5 walk-off win. The victory secured Tigres a berth in the wild-card series and eliminated Tiburones de La Guaira from contention.

Despite multiple MLB players on the team, Tiburones — the 2023-24 LVBP champions and Caribbean Series winners — endured a massively disappointing season.

The wild-card series begins Monday between Tigres de Aragua and Caribes de Anzoátegui. As the fifth seed, Caribes need just one win to advance, while Tigres must win twice.

Offensively, the statistics favor Caribes. They posted a .837 team OPS and hit 70 home runs in 56 games, both second in the league behind Cardenales de Lara. In contrast, Tigres finished with the third-worst OPS (.777) and the second-fewest home runs (30). Tigres rely heavily on small ball, leading LVBP with 26 sacrifice hits and finishing second with 49 stolen bases.

Pitching slightly favors the Tigres. They ranked second in ERA (4.50) and led the league in WHIP (1.46), posting a league-best 3.54 ERA at home. On the road, however, their ERA ballooned to 5.51. Caribes finished with a 5.16 ERA and led the league in home runs allowed (65) and walks issued (245). With the best Tigres pitcher down the stretch in José Martínez likely unavailable to start, the series could feature plenty of offense, favoring the power-heavy Caribes.

Final standings:

  • Cardenales de Lara: 30-26
  • Bravos de Margarita: 29-27
  • Navegantes del Magallanes: 29-27
  • Águilas del Zulia: 29-27
  • Caribes de Anzoátegui: 28-28
  • Tigres de Aragua: 28-28
  • Tiburones de La Guaira: 27-29
  • Leones del Caracas: 24-32

Gorkys Hernández won the 2025-26 batting title with a .374 average, edging Ildemaro Vargas (.370). Rays prospect Jadher Areinamo was the league’s most productive hitter, leading LVBP with a 1.112 OPS, more than 100 points clear of the field. Balbino Fuenmayor was the only other qualified hitter with an OPS above 1.000 and led the league with 17 home runs, tying the Caribes franchise record and bringing his career total to 96.

Navegantes del Magallanes starter Ricardo Sánchez claimed the ERA title with a 3.04 mark.

Action resumes Monday with the wild-card series. A Caribes win sends them to the round robin, while a Tigres victory would force a decisive game Tuesday
