PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – As clouds loomed over Clover Park on Monday afternoon, the New York Mets prepared for their night game against the St. Louis Cardinals. With Opening Day just two weeks away, World Baseball Network caught up with Mets outfielder Jose Siri to discuss his successful 2024-25 season with the Gigantes del Cibao in LIDOM and his transition to spring training.

Siri, 29, was born in Sabana Grande de Boya, Dominican Republic. He has played four seasons in Major League Baseball, debuting with the Houston Astros in 2021 before moving to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022. The Mets acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay on Nov. 19, 2024, sending right-hander Eric Orze to the Rays in exchange.

Before joining the Mets, Siri played 130 games with Tampa Bay in 2024, hitting .187 over 446 plate appearances. He recorded 75 hits, 16 doubles, one triple, 18 home runs, 47 RBI, 14 stolen bases, and 31 walks, with 170 strikeouts and a .620 OPS.

During the 2024-25 LIDOM season, Siri played 17 games for the Gigantes del Cibao. He batted .260/.356/.400 with 13 hits, four doubles, one home run, four RBI, nine stolen bases, and seven walks while striking out 16 times.

“I’m really happy that I got prepared to play in LIDOM this past offseason and the selective amount of pitching that I had to adjust with prior to going to camp this past month,” Siri told World Baseball Network during pregame.

Siri also played as a reinforcement for the Leones del Escogido during their championship-winning run at the 2025 Caribbean Series. Managed by former MLB star Albert Pujols, Escogido defeated the Tigres del Licey in the best-of-seven LIDOM championship series.

In 11 games during the LIDOM Round Robin, Siri hit .195/.277/.341 over 41 at-bats, collecting eight hits, one double, one triple, one home run, four RBI, and two stolen bases. He struck out 11 times and walked three times.

Siri played in all seven in the 2024-25 LIDOM best-of-seven championship with the Leones del Escogido.  His offensive performance declined, batting .125/.125 /.188 with 16 at-bats, scoring two runs, two hits, one double, one RBI, one stolen base, and striking out 10 times. The Leones del Escogido won in seven games over the Tigres del Licey, winning their 17th LIDOM championship and fifth Caribbean Series appearance.

His performance declined in the championship series, where he batted .125/.125/.188 over seven games. He managed two hits in 16 at-bats, scoring two runs while adding one double, one RBI, and one stolen base. Despite his struggles, the Leones won the LIDOM title in seven games, securing their 17th championship and earning their fifth trip to the Caribbean Series.

Now, Siri is competing for playing time in center field during Mets camp, battling Brandon Nimmo and Tyrone Taylor for a roster spot.

Mets second-year manager Carlos Mendoza spoke about Siri’s performance before Monday’s game.

“I think he’s been really good. We’re not looking at results right now, but the quality of the at-bats for some of the guys. Siri’s contact he has been consistent with putting good swings in since he’s been in camp alongside him working key counts in his plate appearances prior to the start of the season,” Mendoza said during pregame.

Siri told World Baseball Network during the pregame that he appreciates Mendoza’s mentorship and bilingual ability, which has helped communication with Spanish-speaking players.

“Mendoza is a great manager. He helps us guys that have English as our second language and having coached in the game for so long, with his experience, that really brings us together from our preparation as a ball club,” Siri said to World Baseball Network.

Siri is currently tied with fellow Dominican-born players Elly De La Cruz, Junior Caminero, and Juan Soto for the most home runs in spring training, with three heading into March 11.

On Monday night, Siri went 1-for-3 before being replaced in center field by Omar De Los Santos in the seventh inning. His lone hit was a ground-ball single to left field, coming after catcher Luis Torrens launched a two-run homer over the right-center field wall in the second inning.

During spring training, Siri has played eight games, logging 21 plate appearances. He is hitting .214/.429/.857 with four hits, three home runs, eight RBI, two stolen bases, five walks, and five strikeouts.

Over his four MLB seasons, Siri has a career .210 batting average in 356 games. He has recorded 228 hits, 42 doubles, six triples, 54 home runs, 136 RBI, 43 stolen bases, 72 walks, and 425 strikeouts, with a .674 OPS in 1,184 plate appearances.

The Mets enter the 2025 season with high expectations after reaching the National League Championship Series last year, where they fell to the Dodgers in six games at Chavez Ravine in Mendoza’s first season as manager.

The Mets won 8-0 on Tuesday night at home against the Cardinals in Port St. Lucie at Clover Park. The Orange and Blue pitching allowed just three hits.  The Mets are now 7-8-2 in the 2025 Grapefruit League season and the Cardinals dropped to 8-9.

New York continues Grapefruit League action on March 11, facing the Houston Astros at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. EDT. Meanwhile, the Cardinals will host the Miami Marlins at 1:05 p.m. EDT at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
