Mets Prospect Chris Suero Brings Bronx Roots and Dominican Grit to Arizona Fall League

Chris Suero’s journey to the Arizona Fall League began far from the desert — in the Bronx. The New York Mets prospect, who can catch, play the outfield, and handle first base, is showing off that versatility this fall with the Scottsdale Scorpions.

Suero, 22, signed with the Mets for $10,000 during the 2018 international signing period after taking an unconventional route — leaving New York to play high school baseball in the Dominican Republic.

“Being from New York, we don’t really get the opportunity — we’re kind of overlooked,” Suero told World Baseball Network before the Scorpions’ game against the Salt River Rafters on Nov. 10. “I went to the D.R. and took the opportunity. My parents are Dominican, so I was able to take advantage of that. It was baseball all year round.”

Inspired by Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer David Ortiz, Suero said the move helped him develop faster and gain the exposure he needed.

“I’ve just always been hungry, so I want to be in the lineup,” Suero said. “Whether it’s shortstop, pitching, it doesn’t matter where they put me. I just want to help the team win and be the best version of myself.”

Now in the Arizona Fall League, Suero is making the most of his opportunity. As of Nov. 10, he’s batting .920 OPS with five home runs, 14 RBIs, and eight stolen bases for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

“There are a lot of dogs and a lot of good players with bright futures,” Suero said. “Coming here after winning two championships this year has been a blast.”

Suero split the 2025 season between High-A Brooklyn and Double-A Binghamton, hitting 16 home runs with 68 RBIs and 35 stolen bases over 378 at-bats. He also caught 73 games, started 24 in left field, and 16 at first base.

His best moment came in June, when he delivered a game-winning home run against the Aberdeen IronBirds that clinched the first-half title for the Brooklyn Cyclones.

Suero, ranked as the Mets’ No. 15 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is projected to reach the Major Leagues by 2027.
