The California Polytechnic State Mustangs sit atop the Big West with a 12-0 start in conference play. They have series sweeps over Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Davis, and most recently, UC San Diego.
Cal Poly also has won eight games in a row dating back to their win over Pepperdine on March 25. The Mustangs are one of the hottest teams in all of college baseball.
The team is getting it done in several facets of the game. They rank fourth in the Big West in hitting with a .293 team batting average. They are also in the top five in the conference in total hits and on-base percentage.
When it comes to pitching, Cal Poly has the third best team ERA in the conference at 4.20. They are tied with Hawaii for giving up the least amount of home runs this season. They also rank fourth in the Big West in opposing batting average (.256).
The real strength of the Mustangs is their fielding. They are the best defensive team in the Big West with a fielding percentage of .982. They also have the fewest errors of any team in the conference.
A real test is coming for Cal Poly the next three weekends. The Mustangs will face off against Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine. These three opponents are right up there with Cal Poly trying to win the Big West.
Nonetheless, the 12-0 start to conference play for Cal Poly is impressive. It has made them a true threat to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
