KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – On Sunday, February 22, the Kent State Golden Flashes pulled off a 9-5 win against the Tennessee Volunteers.
This earned Kent State the series win against Tennessee at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville. Their record moves to 5-2 on the season.
Kent State head coach Jeff Duncan talked about the big weekend for his team.
“It was just a great team weekend for us,” Duncan said. “We took advantage of every opportunity we had and are so grateful to be here at Tennessee as a program. This is a good team.”
Evan Holewinski with a Huge Relief Appearance for Kent State
The Golden Flashes got a great performance out of right-handed pitcher Evan Holewinski on Sunday.
Holewinski replaced starting pitcher Ben Rabatin, who went 4 1/3 innings. The Kent State reliever finished out the rest of the game, pitching 4 2/3 innings. He struck out three Tennessee hitters, allowed just three hits, and gave up only two unearned runs.
Duncan highlighted Holewinski in his postgame comments to World Baseball Network.
‘We won’t take a backseat to anybody.’
The Golden Flashes got through a strenuous schedule this week in decent shape. Before their weekend series against the Volunteers, Kent State also played against the reigning national champion LSU Tigers on Monday, February 16.
The Golden Flashes went .500 (2-2) in those four games. They lost the two games they played against Tennessee and LSU by a combined four runs.
Duncan talked about the momentum his team has from a great week for his Kent State team.
“We won’t take a backseat to anybody,” Duncan said to WBN. “We must make sure we play Kent State baseball, which is being process-oriented and winning one pitch at a time.”
He added, “We have some really good team speed and can force pressure.”
The Golden Flashes had eight steals as a team this weekend in all three games against Tennessee.
Up next for Kent State
