Heading into April, the Lamar Cardinals are one of the hottest teams in all of Division I baseball. They have won eight games in a row and are 23-7 overall with the most wins of any team in the Southland Conference up to this point in the season.
The win streak started back on March 18 in New Orleans against the Tulane Green Wave in a midweek matchup. Lamar won that game 14-4.
Then, the Cardinals played the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at home in Vincent-Beck Stadium in a three-game weekend series. The team got the sweep and shut out Texas A&M-CC in two of those three games, pushing the win streak to four games.
After a low-scoring 2-1 win in a midweek matchup with the Rice Owls, the Cardinals prepared for another three-game, weekend series. This time, they hit the road to play the Incarnate Word Cardinals.
They completed a weekend sweep on the road in San Antonio against Incarnate Word. The third game of the series on Sunday was a 17-6 mercy rule win where Lamar strung together 17 hits and scored 11 runs in the fourth inning alone.
The Cardinals were 3-6 in Southland play before the start of the win streak, but have risen above .500 in conference play heading into April.
This winning stretch has made Lamar a formidable mid-major that the college baseball world should keep an eye on.
The Cardinals’ next game is Tuesday, April 1, against Tarleton State. The game will be on the road in Stephenville, Texas at the Tarleton Baseball Complex. The first pitch for this midweek matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT.
