The Minnesota Twins, along with the Treasure Island Resort & Casino and the Prairie Island Indian Community, unveiled a Franklin baseball glove celebrating Native American heritage. The gloves, which were custom-designed by Treasure Island and the Prairie Island Indian Community, are the first of their kind and will be given away to the first 5,000 fans who attend the Twins annual Native American Heritage Night on August 31.

Executive Director of the Twins Community Fund Kristin Rortvedt said this about the gloves: “Dakota heritage is our state’s heritage, and we are proud to celebrate the Prairie Island Indian Community and help spread the joy of baseball through these amazing gloves.”

The gloves feature several design inspirations that pay homage to the Native American community. Minnesota comes from the Dakota name for the region Mni Šota Makoce. The outside of the glove features Mni Šota in Twins font. The eagle on the glove represents a sacred symbol for the Dakota community.

A design that resembles pieces of a star quilt, a gift given as a symbol of great reverence for an individual’s contribution to the community, appears on the palm of the glove. The Prairie Island Indian Community seal and the Twins “TC” mark on the glove.

According to the Baseball Almanac, the Twins have had two Native American players in their history. Catcher Dwight Lowry played seven games for the Twins in 1988. Kyle Lohse was a right-handed Minnesota pitcher for six seasons from 2001 to 2006. He had a 51-57 record with a 4.88 ERA.
