MLB Draft: International Players Selected in Round 14

After no international prospects were taken in round 13 of the MLB Draft, three were selected in round 14. Here is everything to know about the newest members of the MLB family.

Ryan Magdic

Ryan Magdic, a left-handed pitcher born in Beamsville, Ontario, Canada, was just selected by the Oakland Athletics with the 406 pick of the MLB Draft

Magdic  has spent time as both a hitter and pitcher in his career and had success.

However, at Victoria in 2023, Magdic started to focus more on his pitching skills than ever before. He still batted, putting up a .291 batting average and a .927 OPS in 34 games. But as a pitcher, Magdic pitched in ten games, having a 3.00 ERA while striking out 16 in 18 innings pitched.

Magdic would use the momentum and confidence he gained from Victoria to transfer to Missouri and focus on pitching. In 14 games played, he had a 4.63 ERA and struck out 37.

Adrian Areizaga

The Cincinnati Reds select another international player on the draft’s third day. This time, it’s shortstop Adrian Areizaga of Leadership Christian.

The Puerto Rican-born 18-year-old is committed to Miami and was ranked the No. 215 best prospect in the draft. However, he has fallen to round 14. The shortstop has a great frame at 6 feet 2 inches tall and great speed to match with a 6.81-sixty time. He has a smooth, easy swing that rounds him out as a whole to be very projectable for the big leagues. The Reds may have gotten a steal if they can get the Aguada, PR native to sign.

Cohen Achen

Canadian prospects continue to come off the board in the MLB Draft. The Baltimore Orioles are the most recent team to select a Canadian player. They took Cohen Achen in round 14 with the No. 429 pick. Achen is a pitcher from Calgary, Alberta.

Achen has spent the past four seasons pitching for Lindsey Wilson College, an NAIA school in Columbia, Kentucky. He has spent the last two seasons as a primary starter for the Blue Raiders. Achen went 5-5 in 2024 with a 4.90 ERA in his 12 starts. Throughout his career, he posted a 23-12 record and a 3.66 ERA. The 22-year-old has also pitched in the Northwoods League in 2024, starting eight games for the Lakeshore Chinooks. He’s 3-1 in those contests with a 2.93 ERA.

He was recently signed by the London Majors of the Intercounty Baseball League, a top summer league in Canada.
