The Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to claw their way into the postseason picture, and Venezuelan veteran Eugenio Suárez has had his fingerprints all over their offense.
Suárez is in his 12th big league season, and his second year with the Diamondbacks. He has made a career out of hitting home runs and added four more to his resume last week, earning him World Baseball Network’s International MLB Player of the Week honors.
Suárez started the week off by going 1-for-7 against the Toronto Blue Jays. However, he hit his stride in the final game of the series. He went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs in the Diamondbacks’ 9-5 win. He fell just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
On Friday night, he hit the 300 career home run mark with a two-home run game against the Colorado Rockies. He trails just Miguel Cabrera and Andrés Galarraga for the most home runs hit by a Venezuelan-born player.
“It means a lot. I never thought this guy from Venezuela would put my name on that list,” Suárez said per the Associated Press. “It’s very special. It’s very good. It feels like a dream come true.”
Suárez did not wait long to bring his home run total up to 301, going deep in Game 2 against the Rockies as well. On the week, he slashed .440/.464/1.000 with four home runs, 11 hits and 10 RBIs.
The veteran leads all of baseball with 67 RBIs. He has 25 home runs on the season, and is on pace to easily pass his 30 home runs from last year. He may also surpass his career-high of 49 home runs that he set in 2019 with the Cincinnati Reds.
