UD AL-BAYDA, United Arab Emirates — Baseball United returned to Barry Larkin Field on Saturday night with a different rhythm. The noise and surprise of Opening Night had settled into something steadier, and the fans who came back for Game 2 carried a growing sense of ownership over a sport still new to the region. One night earlier, Karachi stunned Mumbai with a ninth-inning comeback. This time, the Cobras arrived determined to flip the script.

Building From the Opener

Friday’s debut offered Dubai its first look at what Baseball United wants to build in the Middle East. Pavin Parks hammered the first pitch in league history for a home run. The new rule set — Money Ball for bonus home runs and Fire Ball to instantly end an inning with a strikeout — showed up throughout the game. Pitchers rode in on camels. Mascots led cheers along the railings. Players embraced the spectacle, mixing entertainment with real competition.

Karachi left that opener with a 6–4 win and early bragging rights. Mumbai came back hungry.

Camel Delivery Returns

Before the first pitch, Karachi starter Franklin Van Gurp arrived the same way fans saw on Opening Night — high atop a camel making its slow walk across the outfield. Broadcaster Joey Zanaboni called it “baseball’s newest bullpen delivery vehicle,” joking with Elvis Andrus about the possibility of an “opening spitball” if the camel turned its head at the wrong time.

“It’s our third starting pitcher delivered via camel,” Zanaboni said, noting how each night the riders were looking more confident. Moments later, he added that Mumbai’s starter, Nyan Hernández, would get the same royal treatment in the bottom half of the inning.

The pageantry felt less like a novelty and more like a tradition forming in real time.

A Fast Start From Mumbai

Once the game began, Hernández immediately took control. He mixed strikes and soft contact, working deep into the fifth inning while giving up just one earned run. His outing gave the Cobras room to breathe, and their offense responded.

In the top of the first, Raúl Shah doubled off the left-field wall to score Caleb McNeely. Miguel Ojeda followed with a sharp single to left to bring in two more. Moments later, Ian Mercado drove a ball straight up the middle to plate two additional runs, giving Mumbai a 5–0 lead before Karachi recorded an out.

The early burst mirrored Karachi’s late rally in Game 1 — only this time, Mumbai owned the momentum.

Karachi Pushes Back

The Monarchs answered quickly. Parks crossed the plate on an Isaac Núñez single when a throw toward third skipped into foul territory. Soon after, Max Jung-Goldberg scored on a misplay in the infield, cutting the deficit to 5–2 and waking up the Karachi dugout.

But Mumbai’s bullpen held firm. Brandon Kaminer worked two and a third scoreless innings. Jacob Hasty followed, and Chandler Woolridge closed the night with three strikeouts to secure Mumbai’s first victory in Baseball United history.

Rule Moments and On-Field Strategy

The signature rules played a quieter role than they had on Opening Night, but they remained part of the strategy. Karachi manager Jay Bell used the Fire Ball challenge against his son, Brantley Bell, who plays for Mumbai. Scott Ellis delivered the required strikeout, ending the inning and creating a moment that was part chess match, part family duel.

Off the mound, Karachi introduced two pitchers who energized the crowd. Faisal Hayat — a member of Pakistan’s national team — became the first Pakistani-born pitcher to take the mound for the Monarchs. He threw two scoreless innings before handing the ball to Musharaf Khan, who added a clean ninth. Each appearance drew a warm, patriotic response from fans waving Karachi flags along the railings.

What Is Money Ball?

Money Ball is Baseball United’s power-play at bat. Each team gets three chances per game to activate it. When the golden ball is in play, any home run counts for double the runs. Managers tend to save their Money Ball attempts for late innings or momentum-shifting moments, when one swing can change everything.

What Is Fire Ball?

Fire Ball is a defensive challenge that allows a pitcher to end an inning immediately. Each team may use it three times per game. When activated, the pitcher gets one chance to strike out the batter. If he succeeds, the inning ends regardless of base runners. If he fails, the at-bat continues normally and the Fire Ball opportunity is gone.

Baseball in the Desert

Barry Larkin Field continues to develop its own identity. The artificial turf glows under the lights, framed by stretches of open sand and the distant silhouette of Dubai’s skyline. Vendors walk the aisles with shawarma wrapped in foil. Fighter jets occasionally pass overhead on their way to the nearby air base. Between innings, kids rush toward the dugout railings for high-fives as the crowd settles into a rhythm that feels part baseball, part Middle Eastern night market.

What began as an experiment on Friday is already becoming a routine. Fans are returning. Players are adjusting. The atmosphere is alive.

A Series to Decide

Mumbai’s 8–4 win evens the opening series at one game each, setting up Baseball United’s first-ever rubber match. Karachi brings power and late-game confidence. Mumbai brings balance, depth, and the best pitching performance of the young season.

With the league running through December 14, the storylines are only beginning. Two games in, the series is even, the crowd is growing, and baseball has taken root in the desert in a way that feels both surprising and entirely natural.
