Venezuelan media have reported that Estadio Metropolitano in San Cristóbal will host a special Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional series on Dec. 7-8 between the Navegantes del Magallanes and the Caribes de Anzoátegui, dubbed the Serie Táchira.
Magallanes is one of the most successful franchises in LVBP history, having captured 13 league titles, including four in this century. The Caribes have also claimed four championships since 2000. Only the Tigres de Aragua have won more titles than either club during that span. These two teams have matched up in the final three times in the last 12 years with Magallanes coming out on top twice. Now they’ll play in the Serie Táchira.

San Cristóbal currently does not have an LVBP franchise, but a strong turnout for the series could trigger interest in potential expansion to the region. The Venezuelan winter league’s 80th season officially begins Wednesday, marking another milestone for Venezuelan baseball. The matchup in San Cristóbal between two of the league’s premier 21st-century clubs is expected to be one of the highlights of the season.
